A top-down satellite view in false color shows a rugged Andean landscape with no horizon line. Near the center, two small lakes of deep navy blue, almost black, stand out against the surrounding rocky terrain. Around them, ridges and valleys unfold in shades of grey, beige and pinkish mauve, with rough, granular textures that suggest eroded rock and scree. Toward the south and west, irregular patches of bright white and very pale blue mark what remains of snow and ice, clinging to the highest slopes in fragmented specks. The upper left glows in intense magenta and red, the infrared signature of vegetation. The light is even and shadowless, as in orbital photography. At this scale — over 14 kilometers across — no people, individual trees or buildings are visible, only geology writ large. On close inspection, tiny scattered white dots appear, lingering snowfields, and thin drainage lines trace their way down the ravines.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the intense red on top and the arid greys in the middle to grasp the altitude and dryness. Then lock your eyes on the two dark lakes at the center; they anchor the whole frame. Finally search for the small white patches in the south: so tiny they almost vanish, and that near disappearance is the core of the story.

ContextContexto

The image is one of a pair acquired on July 21, 2002 and March 15, 2024 by the ASTER instrument aboard a satellite operated by NASA, METI, AIST and Japan Space Systems, distributed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It covers 14.2 by 15.3 kilometers in the Venezuelan Andes at 8.5 degrees north, 71 degrees west. According to source information, it documents the retreat of the Humboldt Glacier, also known as La Corona, the country's last glacier. Cited scientists report it shrank from about 450 hectares to about two, so it was reclassified from glacier to ice field, which would make Venezuela the first nation in modern times to lose all its glaciers. The exact current status is debated among specialists.

Curious detailDato curioso

The vivid red is not hot rock but vegetation seen in near-infrared, a standard ASTER technique to separate plants, rock, ice and water.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does it feel to realize that a white speck so small from space was once a glacier spanning hundreds of hectares?¿Qué sientes al saber que una mancha blanca tan pequeña vista desde el espacio era antes un glaciar de cientos de hectáreas?
  2. How does your reading change when you learn the intense red is plant life, not desert ground?¿Cómo cambia tu lectura saber que el rojo intenso es vida vegetal y no suelo desértico?
  3. Without a caption, would you see this as a story of loss or simply as a beautiful landscape?

From my work I look at this image as a painful before and after. What I see are gray and beige slopes, exposed rock where there used to be white. Those two almost black navy lagoons in the center are like wounds left by the ice as it retreats. The little white patches at the bottom are no longer a glacier, they are remnants clinging on. The magenta red from the infrared reminds me that every material records its loss, and here the loss is the ice itself.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I love that this is seen from orbit, top-down, with no horizon and even light. It is a view more than 14 kilometers wide taken by the ASTER instrument. The false color is not decoration: the intense red reveals vegetation in infrared, the white and light blue are snow and ice, and the navy blue are glacial lagoons. From above we see no people or houses, just valleys, ridges and drainage lines. It is pure geography seen as if we were the satellite itself.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a map of another planet. I see wrinkled beige and gray mountains, like dry clay. In the middle there are two super dark blue little lakes, they look like eyes. At the bottom there is spilled white whipped cream, that is the snow melting away. At the top left everything turned bright red and pink, like paint. There are no little houses or trees, everything is huge. If you look closely there are tiny white dots, little bits of ice hiding away.
