What you would seeLo que verías
This image is a still frame from a scientific animation set against a deep black background representing outer space. At the very center, a tiny bright dot labeled «Sun» stands for the Sun, surrounded by a faint whitish glow. Around it, two nearly concentric elliptical orbits are drawn: one in a pale bluish-gray tone for Earth and one in a greenish-yellow for asteroid 2024 PT5. Together they form a large ring that fills almost the entire frame. At the top of the orbital ring, two extremely small and close markers are labeled «Earth» and «2024 PT5», with a subtle trail suggesting motion. In the upper right corner, small pale blue text shows a UTC timestamp — December 31, 2023, 12:29:43 — and the note «1,000,000x time», indicating highly accelerated time. The lighting is flat and digital, with no shadows, and background stars appear as barely visible white specks. The composition is centered and minimalist, with a vast empty black field in the middle that emphasizes cosmic scale and the closeness of the two trajectories seen from above the plane of the solar system.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the tiny center where the Sun sits, then follow the large outer ring to the top to locate Earth and the asteroid almost overlapping. Notice how close and parallel their two orbits appear and the immense emptiness separating them from the Sun. That detail of proximity without intersection changes the reading: it is not an impending collision, but a temporary distant companionship.
ContextContexto
This frame comes from a 53-second animation created by NASA/JPL-Caltech and released on October 2, 2024. The animation depicts the motion of the small near-Earth asteroid 2024 PT5 as it orbits the Sun between December 31, 2023 and September 9, 2025, sped up by about one million times. According to the source data, the asteroid was first observed on August 7, 2024 by the Sutherland, South Africa telescope of the University of Hawaii's Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), funded by NASA. It is estimated to be about 10 meters wide and does not pose a hazard to Earth. Although it has a similar orbit to our planet and will linger as a distant companion for a few months, it will not be captured by Earth's gravity.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although popular media called it a «mini-moon», NASA clarified that 2024 PT5 never becomes gravitationally bound to Earth, unlike a true moon; it only appears to accompany us because its path around the Sun closely mirrors ours.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What does it make you feel to see Earth reduced to a speck sharing its orbit with a truck-sized asteroid?¿Qué te hace sentir ver a la Tierra reducida a un puntito que comparte órbita con un asteroide del tamaño de un camión?
- Why do you think science needs to speed up time a million times for us to grasp this motion?¿Por qué crees que la ciencia necesita acelerar el tiempo un millón de veces para que comprendamos este movimiento?
- If the empty center takes up so much space, what does that composition tell us about our idea of closeness in the solar system?

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a restorer I notice what is not obvious at first glance. This image is digital, with no pigment or craquelure, but it does involve careful color and light choices. The absolute black background is #000000 and lets the emptiness breathe, while two thin ellipses occupy the center: a bluish gray one for Earth and a yellowish green one for the asteroid. The labels are minimal and the pale blue text in the corner marks the accelerated time. I am interested in how the simulation remains legible despite its minimalism.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
What excites me most is recognizing a real cosmic dance. We see the Sun as a bright dot at the center and, around it, two almost concentric orbits seen from above the plane of the solar system. The bluish gray one is Earth and the yellowish green one is asteroid 2024 PT5, which in this frame from December 31 2023 appears right next to us. I love that detail of «1,000,000x time» because it reveals we are watching months of motion in seconds, with flat light and no shadows.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like the Sun is a little lamp in the middle of the darkness and it has two paths drawn around it like giant marble tracks. One path is light blue and belongs to Earth, the other is yellowish green and belongs to asteroid 2024 PT5. At the top the two little dots are together, as if they were friends walking side by side. Everything is black like nighttime and there are tiny letters with the date. I like how space looks so empty and so tidy at the same time.
