What you would seeLo que verías

Vertical orbital photograph with north roughly at the top. The Tyrrhenian Sea fills the upper half and right edge, a deep, uniform navy blue with no visible clouds or waves at this altitude. Slightly left of center, Mount Vesuvius stands out as a dark circular cone with a reddish crater clearly defined, surrounded by a radial gray-green stain of old ash and lava flows. Around it spreads a dense, pale urban fabric of grays and beiges hugging the shoreline of the Gulf of Naples, with hairline roads and the lighter patch of the metropolitan area. North of the gulf, the Sorrento Peninsula juts into the sea, its mountainous terrain in brown and ochre tones marked by shadows along ridges and valleys; off its tip lies the small, elongated island of Capri, and farther north, isolated in blue, the island of Ischia. To the east, the coastal plain opens onto a pale, curved beach, with green and ochre agricultural patterns inland. The light is high and crisp, typical of orbit, with no atmospheric haze; scale makes entire cities look tiny while geology and human settlement remain visible together.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dark crater of Vesuvius and move north to the intense blue of the gulf. Then compare the rugged, rocky peninsula with the pale, speckled plain of the city. Notice how a single view brings together volcano, islands, coastline and urban pattern at continental scale.

ContextContexto

Image catalogued as STS001-13-442, taken on April 14, 1981 from about 276 kilometers altitude with a handheld 70mm camera aboard Space Shuttle Columbia, according to NASA data. It was captured in the final hours in orbit of STS-1, the first flight of a reusable spacecraft, crewed by astronauts John W. Young and Robert L. Crippen, who exposed several magazines of color film during just over two days in orbit. The frame includes the Gulf of Naples, Naples, Castellammare, Amalfi, Capri, Sorrento, Mount Vesuvius and the area of Pompeii. The photograph belongs to Earth observation from space, used for both public outreach and geographic study.

Curious detailDato curioso

This picture was taken during the inaugural mission of the Space Shuttle program; STS-1 launched on April 12, 1981 and landed on April 14, so the image dates from the very first shuttle return to Earth.

I focus on how this image has traveled and survived. It is a 70 mm photo taken at 276 kilometers altitude from Columbia on April 14 1981, and what I see is intact: the deep blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea without scratches, the reddish crater of Vesuvius sharp, the pale pattern of Naples. I think about the overhead light that forgives nothing, about the film exposed by Young and Crippen in a two-day mission. Preserving it means protecting that clarity and its documentary value for Earth observation.

From orbit, at 276 kilometers, everything makes more sense. This vertical shot from STS-1, STS001-13-442 from Columbia, has north up and shows the Mediterranean like a laboratory. Vesuvius appears as a dark circle with a reddish center, surrounded by grays and greens of ancient lavas, while Naples spreads as a beige patch. I love spotting Capri, Ischia and the Sorrento peninsula cut against the blue Tyrrhenian Sea. It is geography and volcanology at both human and geological scale.

It feels like I am on a spaceship! I see lots of dark blue sea at the top and on the right, like a giant pool with no waves. In the middle there is a volcano that looks like a black button with a red center, Vesuvius, and around it tiny gray houses that are Naples. I also see a long mountain going into the sea, that is Sorrento, and two little islands, Capri and Ischia, like floating pebbles. I like that you can see cities and mountains at the same time from so high up.
