What you would seeLo que verías
The composition is dominated by deep darkness occupying most of the frame, both above and below. Running horizontally near the lower third, a very thin curved band crosses the image from edge to edge: it is the limb of Earth seen from orbit. That curve separates two different kinds of blackness: above it, space with no visible stars; below it, the planet's night side, uniform and opaque. Fine layers of color are stacked along the curve. The most intense is a luminous, continuous band of electric blue that follows the curvature precisely. Beneath it runs a narrower line of orange and reddish light, varying in brightness, like a sunset flattened against the horizon. At the far right, that red glow widens slightly and reveals low, irregular dark silhouettes rising above the line: clouds seen in profile. Almost exactly at the center, just above the blue band, a tiny, isolated, brilliant white dot can be made out. It is Venus. Its scale is minimal against the immense blackness, and it can easily be missed at first glance. No spacecraft, people, lettering, or other objects are visible; the texture is smooth and photographic, with soft transitions between black and color.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the curve of the Earth from left to right and notice how thin the colored atmosphere looks against the blackness. Then search for the tiny white point just above the blue band, near the center. Realizing that this point is Venus changes the scale of the whole scene: what seemed abstract becomes a view of two planets from a third vantage point in space.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this photograph was taken on May 8, 1989, by the crew of mission STS-30 aboard the space shuttle Atlantis (OV-104). It belongs to the NASA Image and Video Library, credited to NASA/JSC. It shows a sunset over Earth, with Venus near the center of the frame. The original description also notes clouds jutting along the horizon, beneath the blue strip of airglow. Based on these records, it is not known exactly which region of the planet the image was taken over, nor the local time there. In safe, general terms, from low orbit sunsets appear as bands of color along the limb because sunlight passes at a grazing angle through the atmosphere.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual fact: Venus, one of the brightest objects in Earth's sky after the Sun and the Moon, is reduced here to a single white pixel-like point, while Earth's atmosphere becomes the brightest, most colorful element in the frame.

If you look slowly you will notice two different blacks separated by the curve of Earth. Above is space, below is the night side of the planet. Above the horizon there is a very thin electric blue band and underneath a thread of orange and reddish light, like a compressed sunset. I am interested in how the photo preserves that soft transition between blackness and color. At the center, just above the blue, there is a tiny white dot: it is Venus. You need to get closer to see it.

What you see is a sunset but not as we see it from the ground. From orbit the atmosphere is seen edge-on and sunlight crosses it at a grazing angle, so it appears as a blue band and a reddish one following the curve. Above is dark space with no visible stars and below is Earth at night. Almost at the center, above the blue, a white dot shines: it is Venus. It looks tiny, but it reminds us how much space lies between us and a neighboring planet.

At first you only see black, as if the photo were empty. Then you find a curved line glowing in blue and orange, like someone painted a smile in the darkness. That is the edge of Earth. Below there is no light and above there is none either, just that thin glow. In the center there is a super tiny white dot that is almost invisible. It is Venus hiding. I like to search for it like a treasure hunt game.
