What you would seeLo que verías

An overhead nighttime view of the United States East Coast as seen from orbit, dominated by the luminous sprawl of New York City and its metropolitan area. At the center, a dense, irregular cluster of warm lights in amber, golden and pale yellow-white tones marks Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs, stretching northward along the Hudson River corridor and eastward across Long Island. Thin, thread-like lines of light radiate outward, tracing highways and suburban corridors like branching filaments against the darkness. To the west and southwest, smaller but still bright concentrations correspond to New Jersey and the elongated glow of Philadelphia near the bottom edge. The remainder of the frame is a deep, velvety background in blue-black, representing the Atlantic Ocean on the right and darker rural land, with no visible horizon or clouds. The image shows film grain, slight vignetting at the corners and soft halos around the brightest urban cores, typical of 1990 analog photography from the Space Shuttle. The overall impression is a stark contrast between natural darkness and human artificial light, viewed on an orbital scale, with the coastline legible only by the abrupt end of illumination.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the brightest central cluster and trace the delicate light threads extending north and inland. Then notice the sharp boundary where the glow meets the pure black of the Atlantic on the right, revealing the coastline by absence of light. Look closely at the film grain and warm halos that give away its analog origin and orbital altitude.

ContextContexto

This is an Earth observation photograph taken on March 3, 1990, during Space Shuttle Atlantis mission STS-36, operated by NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC). According to source data, it shows New York City at night along the Eastern Seaboard and the Atlantic Ocean, with city lights outlining the densely populated urban core and surrounding major highways. STS-36 launched on February 28, 1990, as a short Department of Defense flight primarily for satellite deployment, during which the crew also captured Earth observation images. The photograph is part of the NASA Image and Video Library and exemplifies late Cold War-era orbital night photography used for geographic and urban documentation.

Curious detailDato curioso

The image was captured on film aboard the Space Shuttle before digital sensors and the International Space Station made city-at-night photographs common, making early shuttle night views like this relatively rare.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does the pattern of lights reveal about how a large metropolis is organized and grows?¿Qué nos dice el patrón de luces sobre cómo se organiza y expande una gran metrópoli?
  2. How does seeing a city as a glowing patch in darkness change your sense of its size and human presence?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción de la ciudad al verla como un punto brillante en la oscuridad en lugar de calles y edificios?
  3. What differences would you expect between this 1990 view and a present-day satellite night image of the same area?¿Qué diferencias imaginás entre esta vista de 1990 y una imagen satelital nocturna actual?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the grain of this 1990 analog film and its soft vignetting at the edges. From my studio I see how amber, golden and yellowish white tones vibrate against the deep blue-black background of the Atlantic. The artificial light draws Manhattan and the five boroughs as an irregular, brilliant mass. I wonder how the original STS-36 Atlantis negative has aged over time and how we can preserve that contrast between natural darkness and human glow without losing sharpness.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What excites me here are not the stars, which are almost invisible, but the ones we switched on down below. On March 3, 1990 Atlantis captured this luminous tapestry of the east coast. I recognize the intense core of New York, Long Island stretching east, the Hudson corridor to the north and Philadelphia further south. Each filament is a highway. It is a light pollution map made from orbit, perfect for understanding how our cities have grown.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like someone sprinkled golden glitter on a giant black tablecloth! In the middle there is a super bright blotch that is New York and from there little roads of light come out like glowing roots. To the right everything is dark and that is the Atlantic Ocean, as if the city were afraid of the water and did not want to get close. I like to figure out which little light shines the brightest and imagine that down there everyone left their lights on at the same time.
