What you would seeLo que verías
The image captures Earth's curvature as seen from orbit, set against the deep black of space. In the lower foreground, the planet's surface is veiled by an uneven blanket of white and grayish clouds, with cottony textures and translucent patches revealing pale blue ocean beneath. A thin, warm orange-yellow line traces the horizon, marking the edge of the sunlit atmosphere. Immediately above it, a vivid horizontal band of fluorescent green stretches across the frame, with soft, diffused edges and a neon glow that faintly reflects onto the cloud tops below. Rising vertically from the center of this band is a voluminous, veil-like column of deep crimson red that fans outward toward the top, threaded with paler vertical rays suggesting shifting curtains of light. On either side the red fades into darkness. The grain of 35mm film gives the whole scene a slightly granular, analog texture, and the light appears self-luminous with no visible source. The scale is planetary and humbling, conveying both scientific observation and ethereal beauty.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the neon green horizon and its faint reflection on the clouds, then follow the vertical red veils upward to the diffuse crown. Notice how the light separates into two color layers and how film grain softens the boundary between atmosphere and space.
ContextContexto
Photograph taken between April 28 and May 6, 1991, from the flight deck of Space Shuttle Discovery during mission STS-39, by one of its seven crew members. According to NASA/JSC data, one mission objective was to measure the spectral and spatial characteristics of auroral emissions. The image shows the Aurora Australis, or Southern Lights, displaying a red upper crown and green lower curtain above Earth's nightside. The original format is a 35mm frame. The individual photographer within the crew is not identified in the source record.

Curious detailDato curioso
STS-39 was largely devoted to atmospheric and auroral studies for the U.S. Department of Defense, and its crew photographs provided rare space-based documentation of auroras usually seen only from polar latitudes.

I pause on the texture of this 35 mm frame taken between April 28 and May 6, 1991. That photographic grain is not a flaw, it is the trace of the original film exposed in orbit aboard Discovery. Notice how the neon green and deep red retain an intensity that seems to glow from within, and how the thin orange line of the horizon still sharply separates Earth from the black of space. Preserving these negatives means preserving a direct gaze from the cabin.

What you see here is the Aurora Australis, the Southern Lights, photographed from Earth orbit during mission STS-39. At the bottom are white clouds over the night side of Earth, then the orange line of the illuminated atmosphere, then the intense green curtain stretching across the horizon and, rising from the center, the red corona like a veil with vertical filaments. One of the mission goals was to measure auroral emissions, and this image captures exactly that structure of light with no visible source.

It looks like Earth is sleeping under a little blanket of white clouds and someone turned on a magic light above. There is a tiny orange line that is like the edge of the planet, then a green stripe glowing like a neon marker and from the middle a giant red cloud rises into the black space like a princess crown. I like that the photo looks grainy because it was taken on old film back in 1991, and that it was shot from a spaceship flying really really high up.
