What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows the curved limb of Earth as seen from space, filling the lower left half of the frame on a strong diagonal. In the foreground the atmosphere and surface appear in deep blues, overlaid with extensive white and soft gray cloud masses that look fluffy and slightly motion-blurred, stretched along the direction of travel. Tracing the edge of the planet is a thin, luminous veil of aurora australis in vivid emerald green, forming a continuous, sinuous arc with spiky, flame-like filaments that reach upward into darkness. The auroral band closely follows the curvature of the horizon, brighter in its central section and fainter toward the edges, with subtle vertical rays and gentle undulations. The background is the absolute black of space, with no distinct stars, which heightens the contrast between the ethereal glow and the void. The photograph has the grain, color warmth and slight softness characteristic of a 35mm film frame, with a gentle vignette and minor blur at the margins that conveys the conditions of handheld orbital photography.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First trace the green arc hugging Earth’s horizon, then linger on the sharp, spiky rays rising like cold flames. Notice how the auroral light rims the thin atmospheric edge and contrasts with the cloud deck below and the blackness above; that narrow boundary is where the phenomenon lives.
ContextContexto
This frame, designated STS039-25-006, was photographed between April 28 and May 6, 1991, from the flight deck of Space Shuttle Discovery during mission STS-39, according to NASA/JSC records. One of the mission’s objectives was to measure the spectral and spatial characteristics of auroral emissions. While over Earth’s sunlit side the seven-person crew photographed geographic sites, while nightside passes were devoted to systematic study and documentation of auroral displays. The image captures the aurora australis, or Southern Lights, produced when solar particles interact with gases in the upper atmosphere.

Curious detailDato curioso
STS-39 was a Department of Defense–sponsored mission and one of the Space Shuttle program’s most comprehensive efforts to study airglow and auroral phenomena from orbit using both cameras and specialized sensors.

I focus on the materiality of this 1991 image, a 35 mm frame taken from Discovery. I notice the fine grain, the warm color balance and the soft vignetting that reveals its analog origin. The intense emerald green aurora is preserved with remarkable saturation against the absolute black of space, while the deep blues of the atmosphere and the soft whites of the clouds keep their contrast. It is a fragile and valuable document that requires controlling light and temperature to preserve its color.

I always dreamed of seeing an austral aurora like this, from above, following the curve of the Earth. What you see as an emerald green curtain is solar particles colliding with our upper atmosphere, right over the limb of the planet. During Discovery mission STS-39, between April 28 and May 6, 1991, the crew photographed this phenomenon on the night side to study its emissions. It is pure science, but it is also orbital poetry, a light that traces the very edge of the world.

It looks like Earth is wearing a glowing green scarf that floats. Down below you can see its white cotton-like clouds and its blue belly, and up above everything is black like when you turn off the light to sleep. The green light has little peaks like tiny lemon mountains. I imagine if you touch it it would feel soft and cold. I like to think that space took a photo to send us a glowing hello from above.
