What you would seeLo que verías
The image is a top-down, orbital view of a vast winter landscape partly covered by snow and cloud. In the lower right and center a dense urban patch appears in bluish-grey tones, sharply contrasting with the surrounding winter white. From this core, faint concentric and radial lines spread outward, suggesting ring roads and avenues. A winding river cuts through the city, with the historic center on its north bank. To the west and south, elongated airfield patterns are barely discernible. Overall the palette is dominated by pure and muted whites of snow, slate-blues of half-snow-covered forests and fields, and dark greys of the built-up area and low cloud. Light is diffuse and cold, typical of a cloudy winter day, with soft shadows and no strong relief. Texture is grainy and mottled: the speckled breakup of clouds and snow, the stippled urban fabric, and thin linear traces of roads. Cloud cover grows brighter and more compact toward the bottom edge, while toward the top the veil thins to reveal patchwork fields and dark woodland beneath snow.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First locate the dark oval of the city and follow the meandering river to its center. Then trace the faint rings and straight lines radiating outward - they map how the city expanded around its core. Finally study the mottled white of snow and cloud and how it intermittently reveals forests, runways and rural roads.
ContextContexto
Earth observation photograph taken between 22 and 30 January 1992 during Space Shuttle mission STS-42 aboard Discovery, OV-103, credited to NASA / JSC. According to the source caption, it shows Moscow in winter, with its pattern of concentric transport rings crossed by straight spokes radiating from the Kremlin on the north bank of the Moskva River. The source notes the Garden Ring following a sixteenth-century wall and the outer Moscow Circular Motorway, as well as large post-World War II high-rise clusters and airports such as Vnukovo to the south and Sheremetyevo to the west. The work belongs to early-1990s scientific and space exploration imaging, probably taken through the shuttle’s overhead windows with standard orbital camera equipment.

Curious detailDato curioso
STS-42 was primarily a Spacelab science mission, yet its extensive Earth observation photographs remain in use as a baseline for studying urban growth and seasonal change from space.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- What does the shared whiteness of snow and clouds tell you about the season?¿Qué te dice del invierno la forma en que la nieve y las nubes comparten los mismos tonos?
- How does seeing a city as a pattern of rings and spokes change its meaning compared to street level?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción de una ciudad cuando la ves como una trama de anillos y radios en vez de calles a nivel del suelo?

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I focus on the material quality of this image taken from Discovery between January 22 and 30, 1992. I see the fine grain of patchy snow broken by low clouds, the blue-gray of the urban fabric and the slate blue of forests and half-covered fields. The winter light is diffuse with no harsh shadows. I am fascinated by how the snow reveals the concentric urban pattern and the radial avenues starting from the historic center on the north bank of the Moskva River, a fragile scientific record we must preserve.

From the orbit of space shuttle Discovery, mission STS-42, this zenithal view of snow-covered Moscow makes me think about planetary scale. It is not a postcard, it is early nineties Earth observation. I can make out the dense grayish core, the road rings like the Garden Ring and the outer ring road, cut by radials from the Kremlin. The Moskva River winds through and to the west and south you can sense airports with long runways among parceled fields and forests.

It feels like I am floating in space with the Discovery astronauts! Down below everything is white like powdered sugar with gray spots. I see a big city in the middle with streets that make circles like a spider web and lines coming out from the center like sun rays. A wiggly worm-shaped river crosses it. Around there are dark forests and fields with little squares, and fluffy clouds covering just a little. It is Moscow in winter and it looks super cold just by looking at it.
