As a conservator I focus on the original 1965 film and the marks of time it carries. I see those four dark lakes over the ochre and beige plain, one of them paler with a milky coffee color, and I think about how to preserve that contrast. The tiny purple and white specks, the fluffy clouds with their soft shadows and the dry riverbeds feel fragile. It is documentary rigor that already looks like abstract painting and my job is to keep it this crisp.

I can pick out south of Addis Ababa the lakes Zway, Langano and Shala in the Great Rift Valley, four bluish black patches standing out against the dusty plain. I love that this mission, famous for the rendezvous with Gemini 7, also pioneered Earth observation, blending science and geography, with even light and a vast scale that turns everything abstract.

It feels like I am up in a spaceship looking down and I see four lakes like ink stains. Three are almost black and one looks like milky coffee, all surrounded by cookie colored land and sand. There are tiny white clouds that look like cotton and make little shadows. I like that it looks speckled with thin lines of dry rivers. If you flip it it looks like an abstract painting but it is actually huge Ethiopia seen from space, so cool!
