What you would seeLo que verías

This wide high-angle view looks from the back of the Mission Operations Control Room toward its front wall. In the foreground, rows of pale grey and beige consoles stretch diagonally, covered with rows of push buttons, dials, toggle switches, illuminated indicators and small cathode-ray tube monitors glowing pale blue; loose papers, folders and a bulky dark printer sit on top. Dozens of controllers, almost all men in white dress shirts and ties, some in short sleeves, are seated at the stations; one man in the right foreground wearing dark glasses holds a pencil and looks toward the camera, another wears a headset. Midground repeats the same modular rows, creating strong linear perspective. The back wall is dominated by three large displays: on the left a world map on a dark grid with white and yellow orbital tracks, in the center a large projection screen showing a grainy televised view of Earth as a sphere against black space. The room has off-white walls, fluorescent ceiling lights, a small American flag near center, and emblems above the windows. The artificial lighting is even and flat, with the soft grain and muted color palette typical of late-1960s color film.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start by following the diagonal rows of consoles from the foreground to the far wall to grasp the scale of collective monitoring. Then compare the large orbital map on the left with the live televised Earth in the center screen. Finally notice the small human details — hands on controls, handwritten notes and focused postures — that shift the scene from technology to people.

ContextContexto

The photograph, cataloged as S69-34316 from the NASA/JSC Image and Video Library, was taken on May 18, 1969, the first day of the Apollo 10 lunar orbit mission, in the Mission Operations Control Room of the Mission Control Center, Building 30, Houston. According to source data, a color television transmission was being received from Apollo 10. The picture was made after Command and Service Module / Lunar Module / S-IVB separation and prior to LM extraction from the S-IVB, while the CSM was making its docking approach. Apollo 10 served as the crewed dress rehearsal in lunar orbit for the subsequent Apollo 11 landing. No further specific names or anecdotes are recorded in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

Apollo 10 carried the first live color television camera flown on an Apollo mission, and its broadcast is the image projected on the front screen in this photograph.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does the repetition of identical consoles and shared focus tell you about teamwork in this era of spaceflight?¿Qué te dice sobre el trabajo en equipo ver a tantas personas frente a consolas idénticas mirando al mismo frente?
  2. How does seeing monochrome monitors and paper logs change your idea of how a Moon mission was managed?¿Cómo cambia tu percepción de la carrera espacial al notar que todo se controlaba con pantallas monocromáticas y papel?
  3. What connection do you see between the giant wall map and the small televised view of Earth?¿Qué relación ves entre el mapamundi gigante y la pequeña esfera televisiva de la Tierra?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause to look at the texture of this 1969 image, with its fine film grain and the even light from the fluorescent tubes. I see the consoles in light gray and beige, full of buttons and knobs, and those little cathode ray screens with their bluish glow. I notice the papers, folders and the dark printer resting on the panels. Everything looks tidy but lived in, well used. I mentally preserve those pale colors and the contrast with the staff's white shirts.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me the excitement is at the back, on those three large screens. On the left I see the world map with the orbital path drawn in white and yellow lines over the grid, and in the center the projection showing Earth as seen from space. From the caption I know it is May 18, 1969, during Apollo 10, the dress rehearsal before Apollo 11. I can imagine the tension as the Command Module approached to dock with the Lunar Module.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant room full of buttons! There are so many men in white shirts and ties sitting in rows that get smaller toward the back. Everyone is staring at their screens. The man in the front on the right who is looking straight at the camera with dark glasses and a pencil in his hand makes me laugh, as if he is saying hi! At the back there are huge screens with a map and the round Earth. It looks like a space movie but for real.
