What you would seeLo que verías

Vertical image dominated by a deep black background that fills most of the frame, interrupted at the bottom by a bright horizontal band in mottled yellows, oranges and dark reds suggesting the solar limb. Rising from the center is a tall, luminous column that leans slightly to the right, splitting into two wing-like extensions partway up, like a torn curtain or flame caught in the wind. The texture is distinctly blocky and pixelated: large square pixels forming gradients from pale yellow through amber to brick red, with hints of bluish green near the base. Toward the top the structure becomes fainter and more diffuse, almost dissolving into the blackness of space. In both lower corners there are small vertical calibration bars with stacked segments of light blue, red, green and yellow, accompanied by tiny white alphanumeric labels indicating coordinates and technical parameters. The image has softly rounded corners and a faint photographic grain, with light concentrated at the bottom and the flare acting as a dramatic central axis cutting through emptiness.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the bright base and follow the eruptive column upward into darkness; notice how square pixels turn energy into mosaic. Then look at the small color bars in the lower corners: they reveal that this is not an ordinary photograph but data translated into color.

ContextContexto

The image is from NASA, catalogued as S74-18098, dated 1974, and described as a graphical representation of an ultraviolet photograph of a solar flare made with Skylab 4 instruments. Skylab was the first United States space station, operating from 1973 to 1974 with three crewed missions; the final mission, Skylab 4, carried out extensive solar and Earth observations. The technique is scientific photography and early digital image processing to visualize radiation invisible to the human eye. The date and JSC credit are recorded in the source; further technical details of the experiment are not provided beyond that description.

Curious detailDato curioso

Skylab showed that solar flares could be recorded in ultraviolet from space, bypassing absorption by Earth's atmosphere, enabling the first sustained studies of solar activity from orbit.

This image moves me because of its technical fragility. I see a deep black background cut at the bottom by a luminous band in yellows and reds that is the solar limb. In the center rises a twisted column that splits into two branches to the right, like a torn curtain. Everything is made of thick square blocks, pixels ranging from pale yellow to brick red with touches of blue green. Below, in the corners, there are small color calibration bars and pixelated white text. The rounded edges and grain remind us this is an early visualization of ultraviolet light.

What fascinates me is how they made the invisible visible. This is from 1974, from mission Skylab 4, the last crew of the first US space station. They turned ultraviolet light into these yellow, orange and red pixels. The eruption is the vertical axis rising from the limb and dissolving above into the black of space. I love the calibration bars in light blue, red, green and yellow in the lower corners, with their coordinates. It is pure science turned into an image, a solar flame captured with pioneering technology.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant torch in the darkness. At the bottom there is a bright line like yellow and orange lava, and from the middle fire shoots upward splitting in two, like a dragon tail. Everything looks made of little squares, like an old video game. The background is super black, outer space black. If you look closely, at the bottom in the little corners there are tiny stripes in blue, red, green and yellow with tiny white letters. I like how the fire at the top gets blurry until it disappears into the black.
