What you would seeLo que verías
An oblique view of Earth from space, looking down at a high angle with the horizon outside the frame. A vast white expanse dominates the center: sea ice and snow covering almost all of Hokkaido Island, Japan, at the bottom of the image, and spreading northward across the Sea of Okhotsk. The white area has a mottled texture, with gray streaks and bluish shadows that hint at mountain relief and cracks in the ice pack. Deep navy ocean appears at the edges: to the south, the strait between Hokkaido and Honshu; to the northwest, the southern tip of Sakhalin Island, faintly visible among clouds and ice. The scene is wrapped in low, cotton-like clouds in small puffs and swirling patterns, especially dense to the east over the Pacific and to the west over the mainland. Faint calibration crosses from the camera are visible over the surface. The light is bright winter daylight with strong contrast between brilliant ice and dark water. The scale is continental, spanning hundreds of kilometers, yet the fine film grain reveals subtle details like filaments of drift ice and coastal fog banks.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the large white area in the center and trace its ragged edge where ice meets dark sea. Then locate Hokkaido at the bottom and Sakhalin at the upper left to orient yourself. Notice how ice patterns and cloud patterns seem to flow into each other and ask where one ends and the other begins.
ContextContexto
Photograph taken on 20 January 1974 from the Skylab 4 space station in Earth orbit by one of its crew members, using a hand-held 70mm Hasselblad camera with SO-368 medium-speed Ektachrome film, according to NASA/JSC data. It shows the southern Sea of Okhotsk north of Japan, with Hokkaido Island as the main landmass at the bottom and the southern tip of Sakhalin in the northwest corner. The image was made to aid studies of sea ice formation and to compare its morphology with earlier observations from the Bering Sea, as part of scientific collaboration between the United States and the Soviet Union. North is at the top when the image is oriented with the largest landmass at the bottom.
Certainty of this context: high. Written by an AI model (muse-spark-open-1026) looking at the image and the source record; when in doubt, trust the source.Certeza de este contexto: alta. Curious detailDato curioso
This image comes from Skylab, the first American space station, and was taken hand-held through the orbital workshop window during its final crewed mission.

Look at the fine grain of the Ektachrome SO-368 film, almost intact after fifty years. I linger on the stark contrast between the bright white ice and the deep navy ocean, and on those faint calibration crosses left by the 70 mm Hasselblad. The white is not flat: it has gray streaks, bluish shadows and fractures that show how the ice breaks. Preserving that mottled texture is preserving scientific information.

We are seeing Earth at an angle from Skylab 4, on January 20, 1974, with the curved horizon out of frame. If you orient the photo with the largest landmass at the bottom, north is up, and you can spot Hokkaido at the bottom and the southern tip of Sakhalin to the northwest. It is a continental scale of hundreds of kilometers, yet you still make out drifting ice filaments and cloud swirls over the Pacific. A perfect oblique view for studying sea ice.

It looks like a giant ice cream melting into the sea! All the white is snow and ice covering Hokkaido and floating over the Sea of Okhotsk, with gray and blue speckles like crushed sugar. The dark blue is the ocean peeking out at the edges, and the clouds are like fluffy cotton puffs. I like searching for the thin ice threads that look drawn with a white pencil on the dark water.
