What you would seeLo que verías
Oblique orbital photograph of the island of Java as seen from space, with the planet’s curvature and the absolute black of space at the upper left. The elongated bulk of Java dominates the frame diagonally, rendered in muted tones from ochre brown to dark grayish green, with a rough, ridged topography. Along its spine at least a dozen volcanic complexes are visible as pale whitish and gray patches, which are actually low clouds trapped inside craters and calderas, some with a small black dot at the center marking the cone. Side sunlight casts soft shadows and emphasizes the rugged texture of mountains and valleys. To the right, the Indian Ocean appears as a deep, intense navy blue, almost free of sediment, flecked with bright white cumulus clusters hugging the southern coastline. To the left, by contrast, the Java Sea is a lighter turquoise blue with beige yellowish fringes of coastal sediment and a thin coastal haze. Tiny island groups and scattered cloud banks dot both seas, and the Earth’s limb fades into a thin pale blue atmospheric rim.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the center of Java and trace the chain of white patches and dark dots that mark volcanoes from north to south. Then compare the two oceans: notice how the landscape reads differently between the clean deep blue of the Indian Ocean and the murky turquoise of the Java Sea.

ContextContexto
Scientific image taken on August 8, 1992 and cataloged by NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) in the agency’s Image and Video Library. According to source data, the view centers on Java around 8.0S, 112.0E and illustrates the volcanic origin of Pacific island groups. At least a dozen formerly active craters are visible and their alignment hints at the linear fault running through Java and the roughly 1500 islands of the Indonesian Archipelago. The color contrast between the deep blue of the Indian Ocean to the south and the sediment-laden waters of the Java Sea to the north is a key feature noted in the original caption.

Curious detailDato curioso
From orbit, Java reveals in a single frame a volcanic chain that is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the highest concentrations of active volcanoes on Earth.

If you look closely you will notice how the ochres and greens of Java tell the story of its rugged relief and volcanic soils, with whitish patches of clouds trapped in craters and a small black dot revealing the cone. I am moved by the contrast between the deep blue of the Indian Ocean and the pale turquoise of the Java Sea with beige edges from sediments. It is a fragile image where the thin pale atmosphere reminds us how much we must care for these visual archives of the planet.

What fascinates me is seeing Java from orbit on August 8 1992, in an oblique NASA shot showing the curvature of Earth and the absolute black of space at the upper left. The island crosses the image diagonally and along its spine at least a dozen volcanic complexes line up, visible as low clouds in calderas. That alignment hints at the fault running through the Indonesian archipelago within the Ring of Fire. Below, the thin pale blue veil of the atmosphere is striking.

Java looks like a sleeping dragon lying in the water! It is all bumpy with little mounds that are volcanoes and with tiny white clouds hiding in their craters like cotton. On one side the sea is very deep blue and on the other it is light turquoise with yellowish edges as if there were dust. At the top you see the black of space and a thin blue line that is Earth's air. I like to search for the little black dots that are the cones.
