What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, filling most of the lower frame, are an astronaut's legs photographed from a first-person, downward-looking perspective. The astronaut wears a bulky, quilted white extravehicular suit with deep folds at the knees and thighs and two rust-red horizontal bands encircling each leg at mid-thigh. The boots are white with thick, textured soles, slightly apart, dangling over nothing. On the left, a white tether with metal hardware stretches diagonally out of the frame, attached to the suit, taut and subtly twisted. Further up, appearing upside down due to the angle, is the shuttle's payload bay: a white structure with mechanical details, cables, golden fixtures, and a dark apparatus with a yellow component. The background is split in two: on the left, the absolute black of space with no visible stars; on the right, the luminous curve of Earth, showing pale blue oceans, swirling white cloud systems, and the thin, bright blue line of the atmosphere sharply cut against the void. The light is harsh and direct, solar, with no diffusion, casting crisp shadows on the suit fabric and creating strong contrast between the suit's white, the blackness of space, and the blue of Earth. Small scuffs and wrinkles on the suit emphasize its materiality and scale against the planetary backdrop.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the boots floating with no ground beneath, then follow the wrinkled fabric up past the red stripes to the tether. Lift your eyes to the inverted payload bay overhead, then to the curved horizon where black space meets the thin blue of the atmosphere. Notice how that single tether is the only visible link between the body and the spacecraft.

ContextContexto

According to source data, the image was taken on 17 January 1993 during Space Shuttle mission STS-54 by mission specialist Gregory J. Harbaugh using a 35mm camera during an extravehicular activity lasting more than four hours. The source description notes Harbaugh photographed his own legs and feet dangling over the void to convey the vast emptiness below, joined on the EVA by astronaut Mario Runco Jr. The photograph is cataloged as STS054-29-028 and credited to NASA/JSC. No further operational details are provided in the source data, but in general such images document both technical work and the human experience in low Earth orbit.

Curious detailDato curioso

This is a self-portrait made in orbit: Harbaugh himself held the 35mm camera during the spacewalk and pointed it down at his legs, a relatively unusual personal framing for early-1990s official EVA photography.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does seeing space from the body's perspective, rather than the spacecraft's, change the meaning?¿Qué cambia al ver el espacio desde el punto de vista del cuerpo y no de la nave?
  2. What does the absence of any ground - only clouds and void - make you feel about gravity and safety?¿Cómo te hace sentir la ausencia de un suelo bajo los pies, solo nubes y vacío?
  3. What does that thin blue line of atmosphere suggest about fragility and scale?¿Qué historia cuenta la delgada línea azul de la atmósfera vista desde tan cerca?

What draws me most is the fabric of the suit, that white that is not uniform: I see deep folds at the knees and thighs, sharp shadows from direct sunlight and the padded texture of the extravehicular suit. The two rust red bands on each thigh stand out, along with the white boots with thick soles and laces, suspended over the void. I also notice the white and metallic tether diagonally on the left and, above and inverted, the cargo bay with cables and golden and yellow parts. Everything is lit harshly, with no diffusion.

I am thrilled that this is a self portrait in orbit taken on January 17, 1993 during the STS-54 mission by Gregory J. Harbaugh with a 35 mm camera. He photographed his own legs looking down during an extravehicular activity lasting more than four hours together with Mario Runco Jr. Below, Earth opens up with pale blue oceans, white clouds and the thin bright line of the atmosphere against the absolute black of space with no visible stars. It is the human experience floating in low Earth orbit documented by NASA JSC as STS054-29-028.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the astronaut took a picture of his own feet while floating! I see his big legs in a fluffy white suit with two little red stripes on each leg, like belts. His white boots are dangling and touching nothing. On the left there is a white cord tying him so he does not fly away. At the top you can see the belly of the shuttle upside down with cables. And below is the pretty Earth, blue with white clouds, next to the super black space with no little stars.

  1. #1

If you look at the astronaut's legs, what color are the two bands around each thigh?

    HintPista

Look at the lower part of the frame, on the white padded suit, around the middle of the thigh.

  2. #2

On the left side of the image, what white and metallic object stretches diagonally out of the frame attached to the suit?

    HintPista

It is not part of the suit itself, it keeps the astronaut from drifting away from the shuttle in the void.

  3. #3

In the background, what two large areas divide the image behind the astronaut's boots?

    HintPista

One is dark with no stars, the other is pale blue with white and a bright line of atmosphere.
