What you would seeLo que verías
Seen from orbit, the image has no horizon or human figures; land and sea fill the frame as broad, textured fields of color. In the upper left, the deep blue Mediterranean turns turquoise near the coast, flecked with a diagonal scatter of bright white clouds and sunlit specks. The shoreline cuts across the middle in a long diagonal: above and to the right lies the Sinai Desert, a smooth expanse of golden ochre and pale sand with faint ripples and soft tonal bands. Below the coast stretches the northeastern Nile Delta, darker and more mottled, in olive green, brown, grey-blue, and dull earth tones, speckled with tiny pale plots, waterlogged patches, and a fine grain that suggests fields, settlements, and channels too small to separate at this scale. A thin, straight, dark line angles across the transition zone: the canal contrasting with the looser natural coastline. On the right edge, a small dark teal lake interrupts the desert. Near the lower center and right, bright white streaks, possibly cloud, haze, or reflective wet ground, soften the delta's texture. The overall light is even and high, flattening relief and making the contrast between irrigated land and arid desert especially stark.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start where the dark blue sea meets the golden desert and follow that sharp coastline diagonally. Then look for the straight, dark line of the canal: it is the clearest human-made geometry in a landscape shaped by water and sediment. Finally, scan the mottled delta for tiny circles, pale patches, and glints of light, details that change the scene from a map-like view into farmland.
ContextContexto
This Earth-observation photograph was taken on April 17, 1993, during mission STS-56, from the orbiter Discovery (OV-103), according to NASA/JSC. It shows the northeastern Nile Delta, with the Damietta branch, the Suez Canal marking the edge between delta farmland and the Sinai Desert, and a dark, waterlogged lake area west of Port Said. NASA notes that this area was becoming more saline after the Aswan Dam reduced downstream sediment, contributing to coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion into groundwater. Round center-pivot fields appear beside the Ramses Canal. The ancient history associated with that canal is reported by the source, but details such as earlier voyages should be read as historical interpretation, not as something visible in the image.

Curious detailDato curioso
According to the source, the Ramses Canal has been re-dug three or four times over the past 3,000 years, linking the Nile system with the Great Bitter Lake across millennia of changing landscapes.

I pause on how this view from 17 April 1993 from Discovery keeps its color balance. At the top the Mediterranean in deep blue turning turquoise shows how fragile the coastline is. Below the mottled delta in olive green, brown and bluish gray contrasts with the golden ochre of Sinai. That dark straight line of the canal is what I watch most closely, because it marks the border between irrigated land and arid ground, and reminds me of what the record notes about salinization and erosion after the Aswan Dam.

Seeing Earth like this, with no horizon and the whole frame filled with texture, always moves me. This STS-56 Earth observation puts us in orbit over the Nile Delta and the Suez Canal on a diagonal. From above the contrast is striking, tiny fields and flooded areas against the smooth pale desert. Those scattered white clouds over the sea and the bright streaks on the delta remind us we are looking through the atmosphere, with high light flattening relief and making inhabited land stand out.

It looks like a giant map painted with crayons. At the top the blue sea has little white clouds as if someone blew sugar over it. In the middle there is a diagonal stripe, that is the coastline, and a very straight dark line that is the canal. On one side the light yellow desert and on the other the green delta with brown and gray speckles. I like to find the small dark green lake on the right and the shiny white patches at the bottom that look like light reflecting on water.
