What you would seeLo que verías
The upper half of the square frame is completely black: the darkness of space, without visible stars. Below it, the Earth appears as a broad curved band whose horizon arcs gently from left to right, edged by a thin, pale blue atmospheric line, slightly brighter near the top right. The centre is dominated by the eastern Mediterranean, a deep, saturated blue that darkens to near navy on the left and lightens toward the coasts, where turquoise fringes mark shallow water. In the lower foreground lies the Nile Delta, a large fan of very dark green, almost black, contrasting sharply with the tan, ochre and light-brown deserts surrounding it to the west, south and east. Thin branching lines suggest waterways within the delta, and its tip narrows southward near the bottom edge. To the right, the Sinai and Levant coasts rise in mottled browns, with a small dark notch at the bottom corner corresponding to the northern end of the Gulf of Aqaba area, and a bright white swirl of cloud over the sea near the coast. Near the visual centre, elongated and pale, lies Cyprus; farther back, hazy and flattened by perspective, Anatolia stretches across the background, with faint islands and paler landmasses to the upper left. The image looks slightly grainy, with soft edges and a dark vignette intruding at the lower right corner, a reminder of the camera and the spacecraft window.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the curved horizon and let the blackness of space frame the planet. Then drop to the dark Nile Delta in the foreground and move north across the blue sea toward Cyprus and Anatolia. The detail that changes the reading is the strikingly straight line at the coast on the right side of the delta: a political border made visible by a difference in vegetation.
ContextContexto
This photograph, catalogued as STS057-73-075, was taken during NASA's STS-57 mission, flown from 21 June to 1 July 1993, and is credited to NASA/JSC. Looking north from high above the Nile, it shows the eastern Mediterranean, the Nile Delta, Cyprus, the Levant coast, Asia Minor — present-day Türkiye — and, faintly on the horizon, the Black Sea. According to NASA's description, a dust cloud that originated in Algeria crossed the region, and the Euphrates, the Dead Sea and the rift valley continuing toward the Gulf of Aqaba can also be discerned. The exact day within the mission on which this frame was taken is not stated in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso
The international border between Egypt and Israel can be seen from orbit in this view: NASA notes that it stands out because vegetation is denser on the Israeli side, drawing an unusually straight line across the landscape.

What holds me is the contrast between that dark green delta, almost black, and the ochre desert, a sharp edge that looks painted. I notice the light grain of the photo and the dark vignetting in the lower right corner, traces of the 1993 camera and spacecraft window that we must preserve, not erase. The thin pale blue line of the atmosphere is fragile, with a subtle glow toward the right that hints at the thickness of the air.

From this altitude the horizon curves from left to right and you see the thin blue skin of the atmosphere protecting everything. Above, the absolute black without stars reminds you that you are in orbit. At the center, the deep blue Mediterranean dominates, with pale elongated Cyprus and hazy Anatolia in the back. Below, the fan of the Nile narrows toward the south and a bright white swirl shines over the sea near the Levant.

It looks like Earth is a giant marble! Up top everything is black like nighttime and down below there is really strong blue water. I see a dark green fan that is the Nile delta, like an upside down tree touching the sea. There is cookie colored sand everywhere and a little white cloud like cotton over the water. Cyprus looks like a pale pebble floating. I want to point at everything with my finger!
