What you would seeLo que verías

This is a high-altitude orbital photograph of Earth showing a strong curvature of the horizon against the deep black of space at the top. The foreground and center are dominated by the desert of northwestern Sudan in shades of ochre, burnt orange and pale yellow, with a mottled texture of ancient reddish soils, lighter river sediments and dune fields. Near the lower center, an elongated cluster of very dark brown to almost black spots stands out, identified as volcanic cinder cones. The surface is etched with pale, branching dry riverbeds that create vein-like patterns across the sand and rock. Toward the background the atmosphere turns hazy and bluish. In the upper left the dark, winding line of the White and Blue Nile confluence can be discerned, and further north a grayish veil of dust almost hides the Red Sea coastline. The light is direct and harsh sunlight with no cast shadows, and the slightly curved framing suggests the view was taken through a shuttle window.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the orange foreground and follow the pale dry river channels toward the bluish horizon. Pause on the dark volcanic cluster in the center, where the desert shifts from uniform sand to complex geology. Finally look to the top for the thin Nile line and the dusty haze of the Red Sea to grasp the continental scale.

ContextContexto

This photograph was taken between 4 and 18 March 1994 during Space Shuttle mission STS-62, frame STS062-151-182Z, held in the NASA Image and Video Library and credited to the Johnson Space Center (JSC). The east-looking view covers much of Sudan in Northeast Africa. According to the source description, the foreground is a vegetation-free and almost uninhabited region, with ancient soils in browner and redder tones, darker volcanic cones and yellowish dune and river deposits. Two background landmarks allow location: a well-known inselberg on a west-bank tributary of the White Nile and the confluence of the Blue and White Niles with the Gezira agricultural scheme between them. The Red Sea coast appears faint under dust.

Curious detailDato curioso

STS-62 aboard Columbia carried the USMP-2 microgravity laboratory, and its oblique Earth photographs like this one were prized by geographers for revealing landforms and ancient river systems invisible on vertical maps.

From my work table I am fascinated by how this orbital photograph preserves the harshness of northwestern Sudan desert in ochres, burnt oranges and pale yellows. I notice the mottled texture of reddish soils, light sediments and dune fields, and at center right those almost black spots of volcanic cones. I am also drawn to the light veins of dry riverbeds and that bluish haze in the background marking the atmosphere. The hard, direct sunlight with no cast shadows reveals every geological detail with extraordinary sharpness.

What excites me most is seeing the curvature of Earth so pronounced against the absolute black of space at the top. This eastward view, taken from the space shuttle between March 4 and 18, 1994, shows the Sudanese desert like a living map. I can spot the dark winding confluence of the White Nile and Blue Nile at upper left and the grayish band of dust hiding the Red Sea. It is science and wonder at once, a real window onto our planet from orbit.

It looks like Earth is a giant ball! I see lots of yellow and orange desert with little spots and lines as if someone drew rivers with a light pencil. In the middle there are very dark brown spots, almost black, which are tiny volcanoes seen from above. At the top everything turns light blue and then black, black like nighttime. Far away you see a dark little snake which is the Nile and lots of dust. It feels like looking out the window of a spaceship!
