What you would seeLo que verías

A color orbital photograph showing Earth’s curvature against the deep black of space. In the foreground a vast arid mountain belt dominates in ochre, rust, and brown tones, with a rugged, wrinkled texture cut by valleys, whitish salt flats, and elongated shadows that emphasize the steep relief of the Andes. The range runs north to south like a backbone splitting the frame. To the left, westward, the Pacific Ocean appears as a pale blue-gray sheen with a thin veil of coastal haze; to the right, eastward, a dense blanket of white and gray clouds covers the lowlands, with fluffy edges and soft shadows. On the horizon the atmosphere forms a thin pale blue rim along the curved limb of the planet. Sunlight from above highlights ridges and basins. The image shows dark vignetting at the corners, typical of a shot through the orbiter window, and sharp detail that lets you pick out coastal plateaus, desert plains, and salt basins as light patches.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow first the reddish central spine of the Andes, then compare the contrast between the hazy Pacific on the left and the sea of clouds on the right. Linger on the small white salt flats: their bright tone reveals water and salt amid utter aridity.

ContextContexto

Earth observation photograph taken on July 23, 1994 aboard Space Shuttle Columbia, Orbiter Vehicle OV-102, during mission STS-65, according to NASA/JSC. The south-looking panoramic view shows northern Chile and the Andes Mountains along the border with Argentina. It clearly features the Atacama Desert along the coast, one of the driest regions on Earth, with foreground salt flats such as Salar de Arizaro and Salar Punta Negra, the latter partly water-filled. On the right a coastal plateau rises toward the Andes; in the distant left, the hazy Chaco Plains and Pampas can be glimpsed. It is a scientific documentary image from the Space Shuttle program.

The conservatorLa restauradora

Looking at this 1994 orbital photograph I pause to consider its preservation as testimony. The view through Columbia’s window shows dark vignetting in the corners that I would not retouch, because it belongs to its technical history. I focus on the ochres and reddish tones of the Andes and those whitish salt flats like pale spots, including Arizaro and Punta Negra. The thin blue line of the atmosphere over Earth’s curvature feels fragile, and my task is to keep that contrast between arid relief, clouds and deep black space legible.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This austral view of northern Chile from Columbia on mission STS-65 excites me because it joins space and geography. I recognize the Atacama Desert running along the coast and the Andes like a backbone cutting the frame from north to south. To the west the Pacific glimmers under haze and to the east clouds cover the Chaco and Pampa. That pale blue veil on the horizon is the atmosphere seen edge-on, and knowing it was captured on July 23, 1994 makes it even more valuable to me.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like I am flying super high in a spaceship! I see brown and orange mountains with lots of little wrinkles like squished clay. There are white spots that are salt flats and fluffy clouds like cotton on one side. On the other side I can see the sea with mist. Above everything is super black space and below Earth is round with a very thin little blue line. I like to imagine I am an astronaut looking out the little window and waving at Chile.
