What you would seeLo que verías

This is an oblique orbital view looking north over southwestern Greenland, set against the blackness of space. The interior ice sheet dominates the center and upper portion: a vast, smooth expanse of white and pale icy blue with a soft, velvety texture, faintly rippled by subtle swells and gentle shadows that hint at slow movement. Toward the western and southern margins the sheet breaks abruptly into a jagged, lace-like coastline of fjords, snow-capped peaks, and deeply incised valleys. The adjacent ocean shifts from pale turquoise near shore to intense navy blue offshore, highlighting the contrast between ice and water. The curvature of Earth is visible along the upper horizon, rimmed by a thin, luminous band of atmosphere. The light is crisp and cold, casting short, sharp shadows within the glacial valleys. Low clouds speckle the southeastern edge, while sea ice and icebergs appear as tiny white flecks scattered on the water. At this continental scale no individual buildings or roads can be discerned, emphasizing the dominance of natural forms.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the smooth white dome in the center and follow its edge outward to where it splinters into fjords. Trace the deep blues of the ocean to the curved horizon. Pay attention to the sharp textural shift from uniform ice cap to rugged coastline — that boundary tells the story of ice shaping rock over millennia.

ContextContexto

A scientific photograph taken on November 14, 1994 by the crew of Space Shuttle Atlantis during mission STS-66, archived by NASA’s Johnson Space Center. The north-looking view shows southwestern Greenland, with Cape Farewell toward the lower right, Julianehab Bay and Bredefjord near the center, and the area of Nuuk — formerly called Godthab — barely visible north of the Frederikshab Icefield. According to the source, the fjords were carved during the last ice age about 10,000 years ago, and Greenland’s central ice still reaches nearly 3,500 meters thick today, flowing toward the sea to calve as icebergs.

Curious detailDato curioso

STS-66 was primarily an atmospheric science mission carrying the ATLAS-3 laboratory to study solar energy and the ozone layer, so Earth images like this were valuable secondary data for environmental research.

Look how the cold orbital light reveals every texture: the ice sheet looks like white and pale blue velvet, smooth but with gentle undulations that hint at its thickness of almost 3500 meters. At the edges it fragments into that lacework of fjords and jagged coasts contrasting with the deep blue Atlantic. I pause on the nuances between pure white, coastal turquoise and the blackness of space. It is a 1994 photograph that retains its scientific sharpness while reminding us how fragile this icy landscape is.

This oblique north-looking view from Atlantis in 1994 is pure orbital geography. At the lower right you can spot Cape Farewell, in the center Julianehab Bay and Bredefjord, and farther north the Nuuk area beneath the Frederikshab ice cap. I love seeing the curvature of Earth and that thin bluish line of atmosphere against the blackness. The fjords you see were carved about 10000 years ago and even today the ice keeps flowing toward the sea to break into icebergs speckling the water.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant ice cream floating in space! The white part on top is the ice sheet, smooth like a wrinkled blanket, and below it breaks into many little white fingers that are the fjords. The sea is deep blue and near the shore it turns light turquoise, with tiny white dots that are icebergs. You can see Earth curving like a ball with a thin blue line that is the air. They took the picture from a spaceship in 1994 and you cannot see a single house from so far away.
