What you would seeLo que verías
This is an orbital photograph taken from high altitude, showing an oblique view of the ocean and an elongated island chain. Near the top of the frame a tiny, dark, nearly circular volcanic island stands isolated from the larger archipelago. From its crater a dense plume of pale whitish-gray smoke and ash rises and broadens into a large, triangular, fan-shaped veil spreading south and southwest over the deep blue sea. The main, thicker part of the plume drifts westward, becoming more diffuse and translucent as it overlays the larger islands visible in the middle and lower portion of the image. Those larger islands are long and fragmented, with irregular coastlines and dark greenish-blue mountainous terrain, edged by thin whitish traces of low clouds or coastal surf. The ocean dominates the composition in shades ranging from medium blue to navy, with subtle texture variations and a speckled glint of sunlight in the upper right. The illumination is even natural daylight from orbit, with no strong shadows except for the soft density gradients within the volcanic plume itself.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start by locating the tiny dark dot at the top: that is the entirety of Barren Island. Then trace the white veil as it widens over the sea and notice where it becomes sheer enough to reveal the water below. Finally compare the minute size of the source island with the vast reach of its plume.
ContextContexto
Image acquired on March 14, 1995 by the crew of Space Shuttle Endeavour during mission STS-67, according to NASA/JSC records. It depicts Barren Island, a small active volcanic island in the Andaman Islands group in the Andaman Sea. The source description notes that the volcano entered a new eruptive phase in late 1994 and the crew documented the plume rising several thousand feet into the atmosphere, with the main plume drifting westward. The photograph is part of the NASA Image and Video Library and illustrates the use of crewed orbital photography for monitoring natural phenomena.

Curious detailDato curioso
Barren Island is the only confirmed active volcano in South Asia, and its 1994-1995 eruption was among the first to be systematically photographed by astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle.

I notice how time treats this 1995 orbital photograph. It is a fragile image, with deep blues of the ocean and a whitish and light gray plume spreading in a fan shape. The contrast between the dark compact cone and the diffuse ash is delicate to preserve. I think about the balance of even light and the sun glint that shifts the tones. Each subtle texture variation tells us about the condition of the print and the NASA digital archive.

From low orbit aboard Endeavour on March 14, 1995, the STS-67 crew captured what I love most: real Earth observation. I see the small isolated cone of Barren to the north and its plume drifting west and southwest over the Andaman Sea. It is citizen science from space, documenting an eruption that began in late 1994. I am excited to distinguish the elongated archipelago below and to see how wind stretches the ash for thousands of feet.

It looks like the volcano is blowing a giant cloud like a dragon in the sea. The little island is tiny and dark and white smoke comes out of it getting bigger toward the bottom. The sea is super blue and the other islands look like green puzzle pieces. I imagine the astronauts taking the picture from their spaceship and saying wow look at that! It is like a drawing made with wind.
