What you would seeLo que verías

The square image shows the Atlantic coast seen almost vertically from orbit. The left and upper half is land; the right and lower half is ocean, divided by an irregular coastline running diagonally across the frame. The most striking feature is the delta: a broad fan in gray, brown, and muted green tones, crossed by dozens of long, parallel, gently curved bands that run toward the sea like combed striations. From the left edge, a narrow, winding river enters in intense ochre, meandering until it reaches its mouth near the center. Where it meets the sea it spreads into a large turbid stain of mustard yellow and pale brown, with diffuse edges and soft swirls, set against the Atlantic's extremely deep, almost black blue. Near the mouth the water shifts to a pale blue-green. Inland, the terrain is mottled dark brown, ochre, and dull green, with a rough texture of plains, fine channels, and barely distinguishable plots. Small, cottony white clouds speckle the north and also drift over the ocean to the east and south. A thin, pale beach rims the coast; to the northeast another sandy stretch and a dark inland lagoon are visible. There are no people, texts, or recognizable buildings: the scale is immense, and everything looks abstract, like a painting made of sand and ink.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start where the ochre river meets the deep-blue sea: that mustard-colored stain is the clearest sign of motion in the scene. Then follow the long stripes of the delta backward, like lines on a record, and notice how the coastline changes color and texture north and south of the mouth. Finally, look for the small white clouds to recover a sense of altitude and scale.

ContextContexto

According to the source data from the NASA Image and Video Library, this is frame STS072-738-019, photographed in 70 mm from the Space Shuttle Endeavour during mission STS-72, between January 11 and 20, 1996; the record is dated January 20. It shows the last 20 miles — about 32 kilometers — of the Paraíba do Sul River, northeast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as it flows eastward into the Atlantic. Its brown water and the offshore sediment plume indicate that the river was in flood stage. The prominent parallel beach ridges on both sides of the mouth form when inland sediment is redistributed by coastal currents. The exact time and altitude are not given in the supplied data.

Curious detailDato curioso

The delta's parallel ridges are not decorative stripes: each one preserves the trace of an earlier coastline, built from sediment carried down by the river and reworked along the shore by coastal currents.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does our reading of a river change when we see it not from its banks but as a system of sediment, currents, and coastline?¿Cómo cambia nuestra idea de un río cuando no lo vemos desde la orilla, sino como un sistema de sedimentos, corrientes y costa?
  2. Which marks in this landscape speak of a single flood, and which ones record changes accumulated over much longer periods?¿Qué huellas de este paisaje hablan de una sola crecida y cuáles registran cambios acumulados durante mucho más tiempo?
  3. At what point does a scientific photograph also become an abstract image, and what is gained or lost in that shift?¿En qué momento una fotografía científica se vuelve también una imagen abstracta, y qué se gana o se pierde en ese cambio?

I focus on how the river leaves its mark as if it were painting. I see that intense ochre of the flooded channel and the large mustard-colored stain opening into the sea, it is suspended sediment tinting the Atlantic. I am drawn to the parallel beach ridges, those combed striations on both sides of the mouth, formed when coastal currents redistribute sand carried from inland. Everything is matter in motion, water, mud and salt mixing and leaving a texture that looks rough and at the same time very delicate when seen from orbit.

From the shuttle Endeavour in January 1996, Earth becomes map and painting at once. This 70 mm frame shows the last 32 kilometers of the Paraíba do Sul flowing east to the Atlantic, northeast of Rio de Janeiro. The coastline cuts diagonally and the contrast is striking between the almost black blue of the ocean and the yellowish turbid plume. The cotton-like clouds to the north and over the sea remind us of the thin atmosphere from which we look, a privileged window to understand floods, deltas and currents without leaving orbit.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like ice cream melting into the sea! The river is like a caramel-colored snake coming from the left and going splash into the very dark blue water. Around it there is a big mustard-colored stain, as if someone poured yellow paint. On the land there are many combed little lines on both sides of the river, as if someone ran a giant comb through the sand. There are also tiny white clouds floating on top and a light little beach making the edge. Everything looks like abstract art.
