What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a deep, velvety black void floats an oval, luminous structure resembling a cosmic jewelled ring. The core is a diffuse, incandescent cloud shifting from intense yellow at its heart to orange and red toward the edges, with a soft, hazy texture like illuminated dust. Encircling that heart is an irregular, grainy ring made of small bright dots in lime green and cyan, interspersed with a violet and magenta halo that fades gently into darkness. Above it, a smaller, more blurred structure repeats the same pattern of a reddish ring and green and blue speckles, like a distant echo or reflection. The light is artificial and color-coded, without natural shadows, creating stark contrast between the absolute darkness of space and the saturated, almost neon tones of the remnant. At first glance it looks like an abstract nebula, but on closer inspection asymmetries, clumps and faint filaments emerge, suggesting expansion and motion frozen in time.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Let your gaze settle first on the orange core, then slowly trace the necklace of green pearls and the violet halo that surrounds it. Notice how the fainter upper ring converses with the main one and creates a sense of depth. Pay attention to the spots where green and blue overlap, where the collaboration between telescopes becomes visible.

ContextContexto

This multiwavelength image of Supernova 1987A was released on February 24, 2017 by the Space Telescope Science Institute Office of Public Outreach. It combines observations from three observatories: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array shown in red, the Hubble Space Telescope in green, and the Chandra X-ray Observatory in blue. Credits are given to NASA, ESA and A. Angelich (NRAO/AUI/NSF) via the NASA Image and Video Library. The supernova, located in the Large Magellanic Cloud, is one of the most studied stellar events of the modern era. No further cultural context is provided in the source data, but the image exemplifies contemporary collaborative astronomy to visualize the invisible.

Curious detailDato curioso

Supernova 1987A, whose light reached Earth in February 1987, was the closest supernova visible to the naked eye since Kepler's in 1604, about 168,000 light-years away, and its expanding ring has allowed scientists to watch a stellar remnant evolve in real time.

I focus on how this image is built, not just taken. It uses false color to translate the invisible: red comes from ALMA, green from Hubble and blue from Chandra, published together in 2017. I see the incandescent yellow and orange core surrounded by green dots and a violet halo, all set against an absolute black. I am interested in the contrast between the soft cloud and the grainy ring, and that smaller out-of-focus second ring on top like an echo. It is a work of collaboration, not a direct snapshot.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This is Supernova 1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud and it excites me because we are still watching it expand. What shines here is not normal light: the irregular ring of lime green and cyan dots is Hubble, the red and orange glow at the center is ALMA and the bluish violet is Chandra. The deep velvety black background makes those neon colors pop. I like to point out the magenta halo and the clumps that show matter in motion. Up top there is another fainter ring, a reflection that reminds us the universe has layers.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a necklace of jewels floating in the dark. In the middle there is a cloud that looks like yellow and orange fire, like glowing fairy dust. Around it there is a ring with little green dots that shine like candies and a pretty purple edge. The background is super black, as if all the lights were turned off. If you look up there is another tinier and blurrier little ring, like its shadow. I imagine it is slowly growing and that each little dot is a spark that keeps moving.
