This is a horizontal scientific infographic against an almost black background. Across the top band, in orange and white lettering, it reads “HOT GAS GIANT EXOPLANET WASP-96 b / ATMOSPHERE COMPOSITION”; at right, in smaller white type, “NIRISS | Single-Object Slitless Spectroscopy.” Behind the central chart is an illustration of a giant planet: a huge, softly blurred curved limb in brown, amber, and cream tones, sweeping diagonally from the upper center downward. In the upper left corner a star glows out of focus, white and luminous with a soft halo; the rest of the background is dark space dotted with faint stars. In the foreground, centered, is a rectangular Cartesian plot with a thin gray border. The vertical axis reads “Amount of Light Blocked, parts per million,” from 13,600 to 14,800; the horizontal axis reads “Wavelength of Light, microns,” from 0.75 to 2.75. Inside, 141 small white points are scattered, each with a thin vertical gray error bar. A smooth, wavy blue line runs through them. Above several peaks, the label “Water H₂O” is repeated. At lower left, a legend distinguishes “Data” from “Best-fit Model.” In the lower right corner appears the “WEBB / SPACE TELESCOPE” logo. The texture is clean and digital, with high contrast between the white data and the dark background.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the blue line and watch how it rises and falls, then compare it with the scattered white points around it. Next, look for the repeated “Water H₂O” labels above the peaks. Finally, notice how the artistic planet behind the graph turns abstract measurements into a world you can imagine.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this image was released on July 12, 2022, by NASA, ESA, CSA, and STScI, and comes from the NASA Image and Video Library. It presents the transmission spectrum of the hot gas-giant exoplanet WASP-96 b, obtained in a single observation with the NIRISS instrument aboard the Webb Space Telescope. The method compares starlight filtered through the planet’s atmosphere as it crosses in front of its star with unfiltered starlight detected when the planet is beside the star. NIRISS recorded wavelengths from 0.6 to 2.8 microns; the blocked light ranges from 1.36% to 1.47%. The marked peaks show characteristic absorption, here associated with water. From this record alone, further details about the planet’s distance or history are not known.
Certainty of this context: high. Written by an AI model (muse-wonder-1.0) looking at the image and the source record; when in doubt, trust the source.Certeza de este contexto: alta. Curious detailDato curioso
The entire variation shown in the graph is tiny: the blocked light changes by only about 0.11 percentage points, from 13,600 to 14,700 parts per million, yet that difference is enough to reveal signs of water in the atmosphere.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I notice how fragile this digital original feels. The near-black deep-space background creates extreme contrast where one hundred forty-one small white data points float with thin gray error bars, stitched together by a wavy blue best-fit model line. Behind the chart, the illustration of the giant planet in browns and amber tones sweeps diagonally, soft and blurred, while a bright white star with a gentle halo glows in the upper left corner. Everything looks clean and crisp, designed so the data can breathe without getting lost in the shine.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
As an amateur astronomer I get excited seeing how a single Webb transit tells a story. Here the vertical axis shows how much light the planet blocks, from thirteen thousand six hundred to fourteen thousand eight hundred parts per million, and the horizontal axis shows wavelength from zero point seven five to two point seven five microns. Each white dot is starlight filtered through the atmosphere of WASP-96 b and the blue line is the best-fit model. Where it says Water H2O we see absorption peaks that reveal water vapor. It is amazing that from so far away we can read the air of another world.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
I am an eight-year-old girl and this looks like a dot-to-dot game in space. I see lots of little white dots with tiny gray sticks like little stars with antennas, and a blue snake joining them while making wavy hills. Behind there is a giant planet the color of toasted bread with honey hiding behind the chart, and a super bright star in the corner that looks like a lamp. At the top the planet name is written in orange and white letters and at the bottom right there is the WEBB stamp. I like counting the peaks that say Water.
