What you would seeLo que verías
This is a wide-angle night photograph capturing an exceptionally vivid aurora borealis over a flat rural landscape. The sky dominates the frame and is split into two great vertical curtains of light: on the left, an intense magenta-red glow with pink streaks and orange-yellow near the horizon, marked by fine straight rays falling like pillars; on the right, a brilliant emerald green and turquoise veil interwoven with dark, translucent clouds. Between them a diffuse violet haze blends the colors. The deep sky is speckled with stars, still visible through the aurora and denser in the dark purplish upper left. Near the horizon a thin amber-yellow band marks the boundary between sky and earth. In the foreground, a two-lane asphalt road curves gently from the lower edge toward the distance on the right, with reflective white markings. On either side lie dark fields of grass and stubble, and a low silhouette of trees and bushes along the horizon. Far to the right, small white and red artificial lights from a village or mast twinkle, with a bright headlight on the road. The auroral light softly tints the ground and pavement. The overall mood is vast, silent and awe-inspiring, with rich texture in clouds and light.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the central contrast between red and green that divides the sky, and follow the vertical rays down to the glowing horizon. Then trace the road that leads into the distant lights before looking back up to spot the stars shining through the aurora.
ContextContexto
The photograph was taken by Aneta p near the village of Lucim by Bydgoszcz, Poland, in the early hours of October 11, 2024, at about 1:30 a.m. According to the source data, that night an X1.8 solar flare triggered a G4 geomagnetic storm that made the aurora borealis visible at zenith across Poland, far south of its usual range. The image was selected as a Featured Picture on Wikimedia Commons and is shared under a CC BY 4.0 license. No camera details are given, but the record documents a well-reported natural astronomical event from 2024.

Curious detailDato curioso
The distinct red and green hues are caused by solar particles exciting oxygen at different altitudes — green around 100 km up and red above 200 km — and seeing both so brightly at mid-latitudes like Poland signals an unusually strong geomagnetic storm.

I focus on how the light tints everything without touching it. On the left the magenta red and on the right the emerald and turquoise green reflect softly on the asphalt and the fields, like a glaze changing the ground's color. That sharp division of the sky into vertical curtains with a diffuse violet veil in the middle makes this shot from October 11, 2024 over Lucim unique. To preserve it I would protect those fragile nuances.

What is extraordinary here is the latitude. Seeing an aurora like this at the zenith near Bydgoszcz, in Poland, is very rare, and it happened because of a G4 geomagnetic storm caused by an X1.8 solar flare. That is why the sky shows two such intense curtains, one reddish and one green, with stars still visible through the glow. The photo, taken around 1:30 a.m., documents a natural phenomenon that reached much farther south than usual.

It looks like the sky was painted with two giant crayons! On one side pink with little lines falling like rain made of light and on the other bright green that looks alien. In the middle they meet and turn purple. Below there is a road curving between dark fields toward little lights from a town. I like that even though it is nighttime, the sky is so bright that even the ground looks colorful. It feels amazing and a little overwhelming.
