What you would seeLo que verías

Against a completely black, empty background, two tiny oval creatures float side by side, enlarged until they look like polished jewels or miniature crabs. On the left, seen from above and tilted slightly upward, is a rounded, glossy body in translucent browns, amber and dark mahogany, with a pale yellowish branching pattern glowing through the shell. Near its front edge sit two vivid red eyes, small as poppy seeds. Fine wrinkles and pores texture the cuticle, especially around its milky edges. Eight long, spindly legs radiate outward, blue-grey and semi-transparent, jointed, bristled with thin spines, and ending in places in delicate feathery tufts. On the right, lower in the frame, the second mite is seen from below. Its body is darker and more symmetrical, with orange-red and golden markings near the centre, hardened grey plates at the front, clustered mouthparts, and a tiny red point between them. Its legs reach upward and sideways like antennae. The reflected light creates wet, glassy highlights and deep shadows, so the animals seem suspended in dark water or space. Without a scale, their true minuteness disappears: they fill the image with a monumental, slightly otherworldly presence.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two red dots on the mite at left: they are its eyes, and they immediately make the animal feel alert. Then turn to the specimen at right and find the symmetrical plates near its front, where the mechanics of its legs are anchored. Finally, follow the longest legs to their feathery tips and notice how finely built a 0.6 mm swimmer can be.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is a featured photograph by Janek Lass, published on Wikimedia Commons under a CC BY 4.0 license and dated 1 June 2026. It shows two water mites, Hydrachnidia, collected that month from the town pond in Rakvere, Estonia. Each animal is about 0.6 mm long, yet it was photographed through a microscope with an 8x objective. One is presented from above and the other from below. The image was made in reflected light against a black background using focus stacking, combining 76 frames into a single sharp picture.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on how light reveals what we normally cannot see. These two mites, only about 0.6 mm long, appear monumental here thanks to 76 shots combined with focus stacking and an 8x objective. The moist shine of the cuticle, the fine wrinkles, pores and feathery hairs on the legs are preserved with a jeweler-like sharpness. The black background is not empty, it is a choice to isolate and visually protect the fragile, like when we isolate a delicate object to restore it without touching it.

Seeing them float on that absolute black reminds me of observing planets in space. They are two water mites from the pond in Rakvere, Estonia, photographed on June 1, 2026 with reflected light, one from above and one from below. One shows its two red eyes and the yellowish branching under the shell, the other its dark belly with gray plates and golden marks. Without scale they look like alien spacecraft, yet they measure less than a millimeter. The immense and the tiny share the same sense of wonder.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like two shiny little space crabs! The one on the left is seen from above and you can see two red eyes like tiny dots and long legs with little hairs. The one on the right is upside down and looks different, darker with orange spots. They float on black as if swimming in space. It is funny that they are so tiny, 0.6 mm, smaller than a crumb, and here they look gigantic, like movie monsters but pretty and shiny.

If you count all the legs visible on both mites together, how many long and slender legs should you find?

    HintPista

Each mite has the same number of legs, like all arachnids, and there are two specimens in the photo.

  2. #2

On the mite on the left, seen from above, what intense color are the two little dots that are its eyes?

    HintPista

Look near the front edge of the oval shiny body, they are small like seeds.
