What you would seeLo que verías

The painting depicts a rocky tidal island topped by a castle and Gothic church perched on a steep cliff. In the foreground, the sea is rough, with churning grey-green and beige waves capped with white foam. Two small boats are nearly capsized in the surf; several men in dark clothing and caps cling to wooden wreckage, their postures tense with effort and alarm. To the right, a larger masted sailing ship appears stranded or half-sunken near a harbour wall. The mount dominates the centre-left, its base rendered as rough rock in ochre and grey tones, with a cluster of small houses near the waterline. The castle, in pale stone, stands out with its towers, pointed arches and illuminated windows, lit by light breaking through the clouds. The sky is dramatic and overcast, filled with heavy grey and white cumulus clouds with patches of pale blue. White gulls fly low over the waves. The brushwork conveys watery texture and atmospheric depth, contrasting the solidity of the mount above with human vulnerability below.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the sunlit castle on the summit, then follow the rock down to the churning waves in the foreground. Focus on the two overturned boats and the figures clinging to them: that small human drama turns the view from a simple landscape into a story of survival.

I look at the surface as if it were a sea in itself. The watery brushwork shows thin layers where the greenish grey of the swell mixes with beige and white foam. I am interested in how the painter built the solidity of the mount with ochres and greys against the fragility of the wooden boats. The pale light filtering through storm clouds lights the pale stone of the castle and contrasts with the dark clothing of the castaways. Everything suggests movement and dampness.

From my perspective, the sky rules. Those grey and white storm clouds letting pale blue through are the real protagonist. The dramatic light not only illuminates the castle with its towers and pointed windows, it also marks the uncertain hour of the storm. Below, the rough sea and the white gulls over the waves remind us how small humans are beneath the atmosphere. The rocky island looks like a natural lighthouse between clouds and foam.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This painting is a bit scary and very exciting! The giant mount with a castle looks like a fairy tale, but down below everything is moving. There are huge waves trying to flip two little boats and some men with caps holding on tight so they do not fall. There is also a big sailing ship stranded near the pier and tiny houses at the foot of the rock. I like the gulls flying even in the storm and how the white foam splashes everywhere.
