Gula Mons and Sif Mons, from the NortheastGula Mons y Sif Mons desde el noreste

What you would seeLo que verías
An immense, arid landscape fills the lower four fifths of the image, beneath a strip of completely black, empty sky along the top. There is no vegetation, water, building or living being: only mineral ground in ochres, burnt oranges, browns and amber yellows, with brighter, almost creamy highlights where the simulated light catches ridges and slopes. In the foreground the terrain looks wrinkled and cracked, crossed by fine pale lines like a network of veins or fissures. Irregular golden patches spread across the middle ground like spills, and winding channels meander from the bottom right toward the centre. Further back, softly rolling hills carry thin parallel striations, as if combed. On the upper left rises a steep, flat-topped mountain with bright streaks running down from its summit; a second, smaller dome appears near the centre, and on the upper right a broader, gentler volcano fades into the haze of distance. The horizon is a sharp, slightly undulating line against the black. The texture alternates between smooth, dark, almost polished areas and rough, granular zones. The overall impression is of a hot desert seen from low altitude, vast and utterly still.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the black horizon and move down toward the fractured plains in the foreground. Then follow the pale lava flows until you reach the volcanoes in the distance. Notice how the mountains look close and monumental, even though hundreds of kilometres separate them: the perspective is simulated and the scale is planetary.
ContextContexto
This is a three-dimensional perspective view of western Eistla Regio, on Venus, credited to JPL/NASA. According to the source description, the virtual viewpoint is 1,100 kilometres northeast of Gula Mons, at an elevation of 7.5 kilometres, looking southwest. Gula Mons, about 3 kilometres high, appears on the left; Sif Mons, about 300 kilometres across and 2 kilometres high, is on the right, roughly 730 kilometres from Gula. The image combines synthetic aperture radar and altimetry data from the Magellan spacecraft, rendered with computer ray tracing. Its colour is simulated, based on images from the Soviet Venera 13 and 14 spacecraft. It is a single frame from a video released on 5 March 1991.

Curious detailDato curioso
The orange colour is not what a camera would have seen there: it is simulated from Venera 13 and 14 images, while the relief itself was mapped by Magellan's radar, capable of seeing through Venus's thick cloud layer.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- If the colour and viewpoint are simulated, in what sense is this still a photograph of Venus?
- How does our perception of the volcanoes change when we learn they are hundreds of kilometres apart?¿Cómo cambia nuestra percepción de los volcanes al saber que los separan cientos de kilómetros?
- What does this radar-built landscape reveal, and what might it hide, compared with an optical image?¿Qué revela este paisaje construido con radar, y qué podría ocultar, frente a una imagen óptica?

I focus on how this image is built, not just what it shows. It is a 3D visualization made from Magellan radar data with simulated color from the Venera probes. I love those contrasting surfaces: some smooth and dark as if polished, others rough and grainy, and the pale lines that look like a network of veins over fractured ground. The creamy highlights on ridges are not real light, they are computation, but they help us read the relief and appreciate the work of turning data into landscape.

What excites me most is understanding where we are looking from. This is western Eistla Regio on Venus, seen from 7.5 kilometers high and 1,100 kilometers northeast of Gula Mons. On the left you have Gula Mons, 3 kilometers high, and on the right Sif Mons, huge, 300 kilometers across. Everything is arid and volcanic: golden lava flows, striated hills and fractured plains under a black sky. It is a world with no water or life, told through radar.

It looks like a desert from another planet and it really is! It is Venus. Everything is orange, brown and yellow, as if someone spilled golden paint everywhere. Down below the ground is all wrinkly with little lines that look like veins, and there are dry river paths that make curvy shapes. Far away there are two giant volcanoes, one with a flat top on the left and another chubbier one on the right. Up top the sky is totally black, with no clouds or birds, just black.
