Venus, Northern Hemisphere: A Portrait Revealed by RadarVenus, hemisferio norte: un retrato revelado por radar
NASA/JPL · between 1990 and 1991date QS:P,+1990-00-
What you would seeLo que verías
A perfect planetary disk fills almost the entire frame, suspended against an absolute black background that suggests the void of space. It is Venus as seen from the north pole, centered in the image. Its surface appears in ochre, golden, amber and toasted brown tones, with lighter streaks and darker zones hinting at relief. The texture is complex and rugged: smooth plains, sharp-rimmed circular craters, sinuous lava flows, linear fractures and tessellated areas with a wrinkled look are visible. Toward the lower center a brighter, highly reflective elevated zone shines with greater intensity, corresponding to a mountain range. From the center, cords and grooves radiate like pale veins across the hemisphere. The illumination is not direct sunlight but simulated, even, allowing the whole hemisphere to be seen without harsh shadows, with a soft luminous gradient on the upper limb that gives spherical volume. Subtle mosaic artifacts and faint straight lines are noticeable where strips of radar data were joined. The scale is global, like a terrestrial globe photographed from space, but showing a dense and volcanic terrain.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the center of the disk, the north pole, and imagine the clock face described in the source to orient yourself. Then follow the pale streaks radiating outward and look for the bright spot at the bottom: that great mountain is the key to grasping the relief scale.
ContextContexto
The image is a computer-simulated global view of the northern hemisphere of Venus, catalogued as PIA00271, created between 1990 and 1991 by NASA/JPL. It combines synthetic aperture radar mosaics from the Magellan mission, which mapped 98 percent of the planet in three eight-month cycles, with gaps filled by data from the Soviet Venera 15 and 16, Pioneer Venus Orbiter and the Arecibo radio telescope. Simulated color based on Venera 13 and 14 lander images enhances small-scale structures. Features visible include Maxwell Montes, the planet's highest mountain at 11 kilometers above mean elevation, plus tesserae, ridge belts, lava flows, impact craters and coronae. It was produced by the Solar System Visualization Project at JPL.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although it looks like a color photograph, Venus is shrouded in opaque clouds that block optical views: this image was built with radar that peered through the atmosphere, and the golden hue is a simulation based on real photos taken by Soviet landers on the surface.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- If we cannot see Venus in visible light, to what extent is this image a photograph or an imagined map?
- What does the volcanic and fractured relief tell us about the geological history of a planet without plate tectonics like Earth?¿Qué nos dice el relieve volcánico y fracturado sobre la historia geológica de un planeta sin placas tectónicas como la Tierra?

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a restorer I do not see a photograph but a mosaic patiently stitched together. I notice faint straight lines where radar strips were joined and a simulated amber color that is not sunlight but a translation inspired by what Venera 13 and 14 recorded. I love how the image makes the hidden visible beneath dense clouds and turns data into a rugged surface with plains, fractures and flows that look like brushstrokes. It is a planetary restoration that respects the invisible and makes it tangible for our eyes.

Through my backyard telescope I will never see Venus like this because its thick clouds hide everything, so this view thrills me. I know it is not an optical photo but a globe assembled with Magellan radar from 1990 to 1991, filled in with data from Venera, Pioneer and Arecibo. I linger on the sharp craters, the winding lava flows and that very bright patch at the bottom which is Maxwell Montes, eleven kilometers high. Seeing the north pole centered with even simulated light feels like finally having a complete map of our veiled neighbor.

It looks like a giant marble the color of caramel and honey floating in blackness. If you get close you see it is all wrinkly with little lines, little circles that are craters and rivers of lava that are not water. The brightest part at the bottom is a huge mountain called Maxwell Montes, eleven kilometers tall! I like that there are no harsh shadows because the light is made up so we can see everything. You can tell it was made from many little pieces stitched together, like a space puzzle.
