What you would seeLo que verías
A single sphere occupies almost the entire frame, centered and floating against a solid black background with no stars or other reference points. It is a planet shown without atmosphere, so its surface reads like a relief map in shades of burnt orange, ochre, amber, and golden brown, with paler, almost cream-colored highlights and a few nearly black patches. At the center a bright, wrinkled mass spreads out like tangled fabric or churned foam, with filaments and swirls extending toward the right edge. Around it the terrain turns mottled and grainy, dotted with small circular rings that suggest craters, wavy lines, and irregular dark stains, especially in the upper right quadrant. On the left side a broad vertical band appears smoother and less detailed, crossed by thin, straight seams that run from top to bottom and reveal the joins between data strips; a similar finely striped texture is visible right of center, together with a small pale rectangle below the bright region. The edges of the sphere curve cleanly against the black, slightly darker at the limbs, giving a strong sense of roundness and scale, as if looking at a glowing metal or stone globe slowly lit from within.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the sphere as a whole and notice that it has neither clouds nor blue oceans: this is the ground, seen through radar. Then look for the pale, tangled patch at the center and contrast it with the very dark spots on the plains. Finally, find the faint straight bands running from pole to pole: those seams reveal that this world is also a collage of data.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is a computer-simulated global view of Venus, centered at 90 degrees east longitude, produced by NASA/JPL between 1990 and 1991. Radar mosaics from the Magellan spacecraft, gathered over three eight-month mapping cycles, were projected onto a simulated globe; Magellan covered 98 percent of the surface. Gaps were filled with data from the Venera 15 and 16 missions, the Pioneer Venus Orbiter, and Earth-based radar from Arecibo. Colors are simulated from images taken by the Venera 13 and 14 landers. The bright feature near the center is Ovda Regio, a mountainous area of the Aphrodite highlands.

Curious detailDato curioso
Venus is permanently covered by thick clouds opaque to visible light, which is why this view of its surface had to be built with radar rather than with an ordinary camera.

- Does knowing that the colors are simulated change how real this planet feels to you, and why?¿Saber que los colores son simulados cambia lo real que te parece este planeta? ¿Por qué?
- What does it mean to 'photograph' a world that no ordinary camera can see?¿Qué significa “fotografiar” un mundo que ninguna cámara común puede ver?
- If these seams and filled gaps were erased, what information about how the image was made would be lost?

I focus on the seams of this image because they reveal how it was made. I see the smooth band on the left side and those straight lines running top to bottom, plus the small light rectangle below the bright area, all traces of assembly. This is not a direct photo, it is a radar mosaic from Magellan projected onto a simulated globe between 1990 and 1991. The orange and ochre color is simulated from Venera 13 and 14, and gaps were filled with Venera 15 and 16, Pioneer Venus Orbiter and Arecibo.

What excites me is that we see Venus without its veil of clouds, thanks to radar. This sphere centered at 90 degrees east longitude brings together three eight-month cycles from Magellan, which mapped 98 percent of the planet. The bright and wrinkled area at the center is Ovda Regio, part of the Aphrodite highlands, and around it I spot circular craters, dark patches and wavy lines. It is a relief map in burnt tones that lets us imagine mountains and plains against a black background with no stars.

It looks like a giant fire marble floating in the dark. It is burnt orange with light cream spots and other almost black patches, and in the middle it has something that looks like whipped foam or a very bright wrinkled blanket stretching to one side. Around it I see little dots like rings and thin little lines. On the left side there is a smoother part with straight lines. I like that it looks so round and glows as if it were lit from inside.
