Bobbin lace (needle lace, reticella design)

What you would seeLo que verías

Against a uniform matte black background, a long horizontal lace in pale ivory, almost cream, lies flat and is photographed frontally as if floating. The piece is a narrow, elongated border with a straight, continuous upper edge from which eight evenly spaced pendant points hang in a fan or inverted shield shape. Each point is formed by an exquisite net of ultra-fine threads creating openwork geometric motifs: at the center of each hangs a six to eight-petaled star rosette, surrounded by a circular mesh and by wavy outlines with tiny zigzag picots along the lower edge. Between the points, the upper band connects the whole with diamonds, cross shapes and small four-petaled flowers in lace stitch. Even lighting reveals the ethereal, translucent texture of the thread, the subtle shadows of the knots and the minimal three-dimensional relief. A slight yellowing patina and gentle wear of age are visible in some fibers, as well as the artisanal, non-mechanical symmetry of each module. The scale suggests a small textile object, only a few centimeters high, intended to trim the edge of a garment or a table linen.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the entire silhouette, like a small hanging architecture, then focus on a single point and follow the thread's path. Notice how the empty space is as important as the thread itself: the pattern is made from what is not woven.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a »Lace Edging of Points« by an unknown maker, attributed to Italy, Genoa, dated 1550–99. It is catalogued as bobbin lace with reticella design and belongs to the Textiles department, gifted by J. H. Wade. Reticella was one of the earliest European needle laces, emerging in 16th-century Italy from cutwork embroidery and known for its geometric patterns. No further information is recorded about its original patron, use or conservation history beyond its museum provenance.

Curious detailDato curioso

Genoese reticella in the 16th century was made without a printed pattern, by counting threads on a frame, so each rosette, though seemingly identical, shows slight handmade variations visible on close inspection.

  1. What effect does seeing such a fragile, lightweight object against a solid dark background create?¿Qué efecto produce ver un objeto tan frágil y liviano sobre un fondo negro tan sólido y oscuro?
  2. Why could such a small and labor-intensive detail hold so much social value in the 16th century?¿Por qué un detalle tan pequeño y laborioso podía tener tanto valor social en el siglo XVI?
  3. If this lace trimmed a body in motion, how would its meaning change as it rippled and caught the light?

I focus on how fragile this cream colored thread looks against the black background. I see eight hanging fan shaped points, each with a starry rosette at its center. The straight upper band joins them with diamonds and tiny four petal flowers. I notice the yellowish patina of age and the subtle relief of the knots, proof that it was made by hand not by machine. It is a reticella from sixteenth century Genoa and every small irregularity tells me how it was stitched and how it has survived.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

When I look at this edging I see constellations. The eight hanging points are like small solar systems: each starry rosette with six to eight petals is a sun surrounded by a circular mesh that looks like an orbit. The upper band with diamonds and crosses reminds me of old star maps drawn with geometry. Against the matte black background, the ivory lace floats like light in space. It is a textile piece from the sixteenth century made in Genoa, but its geometric order makes me think of the cosmos.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like an upside down little crown! I see eight little points hanging like fairy houses with a tiny star in the middle. The top part is a straight line and the bottom points have zigzag like tiny shark teeth. It is light creamy colored and looks see through like a spiderweb. I like to count the points one by one and spot the little flowers between them. They say it is from Italy many many years ago and it was used to decorate clothes or tablecloths.
