Bobbin lace
What you would seeLo que verías
Against a completely smooth black background, two horizontal strips of bone-white lace are separated by a wide expanse of darkness. The upper strip crosses almost the entire width of the image: it is long, narrow, and slightly irregular, with a straight upper edge and a lower edge shaped into scallops. The lower piece is much shorter, centered in the bottom half, and curves gently upward at both ends, as if it retained the shape of a garment or support where it once lay. Both pieces show an extremely fine, translucent mesh made of repeated flowers, leaves, scrolls, fans, and tiny clusters. Looked at slowly, denser and more opaque areas with raised petals appear beside openwork so airy that the black ground shows through. There are small multi-petaled blossoms, round rosettes, curving stems, and minute dots organizing the design. The light is even and frontal, without harsh highlights, emphasizing the fragility of the thread and the slight unevenness of the handmade work. The ends are cut straight. With no object for scale, the real size is hard to judge, although the delicacy suggests something meant to be seen up close, along the edge of a fabric.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the long upper strip from end to end and notice how the floral pattern repeats without ever looking mechanically identical. Then move to the shorter lower piece, where the details are easier to read. The contrast between dense petals and nearly transparent openwork changes the lace from simple decoration into a play of shadow and texture.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is an edging dated 1740–60, made in Devonshire, England, by an unknown maker using the bobbin lace technique. Although it was made in Great Britain, it copies Brussels Point d'Angleterre lace. It belongs to the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is credited as a Gift of J. H. Wade. Bobbin lace is created by braiding and twisting threads wound on bobbins. In the eighteenth century, fine lace was a costly ornament for clothing and household textiles. Who made this piece, who used it, and which garment it trimmed are not known; it was probably made as an edging, as its title indicates.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail: along the long strip, the scallops and flowers look repetitive at first glance, but up close no section is exactly like another, revealing the small variations of handwork.

I look at this lace border from 1740 to 1760 made in Devonshire with bobbin technique, copying the Brussels Point d'Angleterre. I am struck by the fragility of the bone-colored thread on the black background and how light reveals dense areas with raised petals beside transparent openwork. I see two strips, one long with scallops and one short and curved, with flowers, leaves and rosettes. I wonder about the wear on the straight-cut ends and the care needed to preserve that mesh without breaking it.

I see these laces as constellations on a black night sky. The long strip crosses like a Milky Way of bone thread, with scallops rippling like craters along the edge. The short strip looks like a small isolated nebula below. Each tiny flower and rosette is a star connected by filaments. I like to count densities and voids, to look for symmetry in the repetition of fans and scrolls, and to think that without a sense of scale this textile universe invites close looking to discover its hidden order.

They look like two lace roads on black paper! The top one is long with little waves underneath, like the edge of a princess dress. The bottom one is much shorter and a bit crooked, as if it were smiling. If you get close you see tiny flowers, little leaves and fan shapes made with bone-colored thread. Some parts look thick and others have little holes where the black shows through. I like to imagine someone very patient made it by twisting threads with bobbins.
