What you would seeLo que verías
Centered against a dark background that fades from black at the top to soft gray behind the sculpture, a single marble head rests on a small black mount and a flat, square black base, seen slightly from the front. It is a youthful, smooth-cheeked face shown roughly life-size in the photograph, cut off just below the chin with a short, incomplete remnant of neck. The stone is warm off-white and cream, with beige and light-brown staining, a matte, slightly grainy surface, and soft shadows in the eye sockets and under the chin. The head tilts and turns very subtly, the forehead broad and clear, the brows gently arched, the eyelids lowered over blank, almond-shaped eyes with no pupils carved. The nose is badly broken across the bridge and tip, leaving a rough, pitted patch at the center of the face. The mouth is small and slightly open, with full lips and a shallow shadow in the opening. Thick hair is swept up and back from the forehead in wavy, carved locks, fuller and more curly at the sides, flattened and nicked on top. Small chips, dark specks, and worn edges appear throughout, especially on the hair, cheeks, and chin, while one ear is partly visible at the side.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the face straight on and notice how little of the expression depends on the eyes, which are left smooth. Then find the break at the nose and the dings in the hair; they change a youthful god into a very old survivor. Finally, move to the open mouth and short neck to imagine the turning head of the lost full body.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this unknown Roman maker produced the marble between 1 and 100 CE in Roman Italy. It is a Roman copy after a statue of Eros by Lysippus, who worked in the second half of the fourth century BCE and was court sculptor to Alexander the Great. In the complete statue, the source says, the god stood naked, his head turned to the right and one hand clasping a bow. Only this head is shown here; where the original Lysippus stood, and how exactly this copy was displayed, are not stated.

Curious detailDato curioso
Visual observation: the eyes have no carved pupils or irises, so the gentle expression comes almost entirely from the lowered eyelids, straight brows, and slightly parted lips.

I focus on what the stone tells us: a warm white marble with beige and light brown mottling, matte and slightly grainy, with losses and worn edges on the hair, cheeks and chin. At the center, on a black mount and square base, the youthful head gazes with lowered eyelids and a slightly open mouth. The nose is heavily broken, with a rough pitted surface. According to the record it is a Roman copy made between 1 and 100 AD after an Eros by Lysippos. I notice how light creates soft shadows in the eye sockets and under the chin.

I see this fragment like a moon seen up close: a single head cut just under the chin, subtly tilted against a background fading from black to soft gray. It appears close to life-size, with a broad forehead and almond-shaped empty eyes without carved pupils. The record says the complete original showed Eros standing nude, head turned to the right and holding a bow, a work by Lysippos from the 4th century BC. Here only the head remains, lit like an isolated planet in darkness.

It looks like he is thinking about something nice because his eyes are almost closed and his mouth is a little bit open. His hair is like thick waves going back and on the sides it is more curly. Poor thing, his nose is broken and looks rough in the middle of his face. He is alone on a black square base and the background is dark on top and light gray behind. He is made of white stone with beige and light brown spots. I like that he looks young and calm even though a bit of his neck is missing.
