What you would seeLo que verías

A small oval and domed metal fitting, centered vertically against a soft vignetted background fading from pale grey to black. The pommel is made of a very dark, almost black metal with a finely pitted nanako texture covering nearly the entire surface. In the middle, two figures in raised relief sit among tall grasses: one seated upright wearing a cap and a kimono patterned with bright gold geometric diaper work, the other leaning forward with a cap and robe decorated with gold circular motifs. Warm gold is used for fine grass blades and for textile patterns, with small touches of reddish copper on some stems and tiny gold dots scattered like dew or fireflies. Above the figures, stylized clouds in relief and a small oval inlay suggesting the moon. The faces are tiny yet modeled and expressive. Side lighting emphasizes the three-dimensional relief and the contrast between the matte black ground and the polished gold highlights. Though in reality palm-sized, here the object appears enlarged, allowing every engraved detail to be seen.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the gleaming gold of the kimonos and grasses, then let the dark granular ground lead your eye up to the stylized clouds and moon. Notice how the two tiny figures create a quiet, intimate narrative within the wild grasses.

ContextContexto

This is a kashira, the pommel cap at the end of a Japanese sword hilt, dated 1700–1850 within the Edo period (1615–1868), according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is made of shakudo, a copper-gold alloy prized for its deep black-purple patina. The maker is unknown. During the Edo period, sword mounts became a refined art for metalworkers who used engraving, inlay and gilding to depict literary, historical or everyday scenes in miniature, combining martial function with high craftsmanship.

Curious detailDato curioso

Shakudo typically contains only about 2 to 5 percent gold, yet that small amount allows a traditional niiro patination process to produce its intense, stable black color.

If you look closely you will see why it fascinates me: the black background is not paint, it is shakudo, a copper alloy with a little gold that turns almost black with a violet tone when treated. That whole granular surface is called nanako, each tiny dot hammered by hand. On top, the maker inlaid gold for the grasses and kimonos and reddish copper for some stems. It is tiny, it fits in your palm, yet the relief has real volume and the faces remain expressive.

What caught me was the little sky at the top: stretched clouds and a pale oval that is the moon. It is night, for sure. The two figures are among tall grasses shining in gold, as if lit by that light. I like to think that the Edo maker, between 1700 and 1850, wanted to save a nighttime moment in an oval pommel just a few centimeters across. An entire sky compressed into the tip of a sword handle.

They look like two tiny people hiding in tall golden grass, as if they were playing hide and seek. One is sitting with a little hat and a kimono with patterns, the other is leaning toward her. Everything sparkles because the background is black and the grass is gold. At the top there are little clouds and a tiny moon. It makes me laugh that something so small it fits in your hand can hold so much story and shine like a treasure.

It is not a perfect circle or square: it is elongated and domed, like an egg seen from the front.
