A small oval and domed metal fitting shown frontally against a dark gray gradient background, photographed in close-up to reveal fine detail. It stands vertically at the center of the image. The base is a deep matte black with a densely stippled, almost fabric-like textured surface covering the whole ground. In high relief across it blooms a lily. The petals curl outward with ruffled edges, rendered in warm coppery brown and reddish bronze with tiny dark spots scattered along their surface, their rims slightly raised and polished. From the flower center six slender golden stamens arch gracefully outward. Behind them at the top, an elongated unopened bud glows in bright gold. Narrow leaves, some gilded and some copper colored, and thin dark wiry stems wind around the blossom, framing the oval. Side lighting emphasizes the three-dimensional relief, the contrast between black, gold and copper, and the precision of metal inlay. Along the sides a thin hollow rim is visible where the cap would fit onto the sword handle. The object is tiny, about fingertip size, yet monumental in the photograph through magnification and sharp focus.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First notice the contrast between the rough black ground and the warm copper petals. Follow the golden stamens curving from the center, then trace the slender stems that frame the oval. Notice how the raised relief makes the flower seem to grow out from the dark metal.

ContextContexto

This is a kashira, the pommel cap at the end of a Japanese sword hilt, dated to 1700–1850 during the Edo period (1615–1868). According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, the maker is unknown and the material is shakudo, a traditional Japanese copper-gold alloy that develops an intense black patina. It is classified under Arms and Armor in the Japanese Art department, and illustrates the high artistry of sword fittings, where natural motifs such as flowers were executed in relief with precious metals.

Curious detailDato curioso

Shakudo can be patinated to such a deep black that Edo artisans prized it as dark as night, using it to make gold and copper floral details appear to glow against it.

I pause at that deep black base. It is shakudo, a copper and gold alloy that turns night-black with patination. I see its finely dotted texture, almost like a microscopic fabric, that makes the lily in relief stand out. The copper petals with dark speckles, the arched golden stamens and the bud peeking at the top show flawless inlay work. I wonder how many hours of polishing it took to achieve that contrast between matte and shine on a piece the size of a fingertip.

This small black vault reminds me of a night sky seen magnified. Against that dark granular background a lily floats like a warm constellation. The coppery petals are like curled nebulae and the six golden stamens look like trails of shooting stars curving gracefully. The golden bud is a comet about to appear. It is amazing how a sword pommel from the Edo period can hold an entire universe made of metal, light and shadow.

It looks like a tiny jewel for giants! It is little and black like my fingertip but it has a huge flower on top. The petals are copper colored like little coins and they shine, and from the center come six long golden sticks that bend like little antennas. Behind there is a hidden golden bud and golden leaves hugging the flower. If it were a magic button I would press it so it would smell like a real lily. I love how much it shines against the black background.
