What you would seeLo que verías
In the center of the image, on a smooth gray surface, rests a small circular porcelain lid, seen slightly from above and from the front. It is shaped like a low, wide dome, with a rim extended like a saucer and a spherical knob at the very top, joined by a short neck marked with a thin blue line. The background is a neutral gradient, almost black at the top and light gray near the base, with no other objects, making the piece appear to float in a studio setting. The porcelain is white, glossy, and smooth, decorated in intense cobalt blue: around the dome runs a sinuous vine with small leaves, tendrils, and buds, and near the edge there is a band of dots between two thicker blue lines. The knob repeats the color with dark vertical petals or leaves. Soft light creates a pinpoint highlight on the sphere and a short shadow beneath the lid. Looked at calmly, a fine yellowish crack can be seen running down from the knob toward the rim, along with small marks and the unglazed, earthy brown lower edge — signs of use, fragility, and the passage of time.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the round knob and then follow the fine crack that runs down toward the rim. Next, trace the blue vine with your eye: its movement makes the small, still object feel alive. Finally, look at the brownish unglazed underside of the edge, where the lid's age and fragility become visible.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this is a pitcher lid made by the Niderviller Factory in France around 1780, in hard-paste porcelain. It belongs to the Department of Decorative Art and Design at the Cleveland Museum of Art and was a gift of the Rev. Alfred Duane Pell. The source does not say which pitcher it belonged to or whether that pitcher survives; it probably formed part of a table service or a vessel for serving drinks. Its blue-on-white decoration belongs to a tradition that was widespread in eighteenth-century Europe, influenced by Chinese blue-and-white porcelain and adapted to local tastes. Who used it is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Cobalt blue was ideal for porcelain because it can withstand the very high firing temperatures needed for underglaze decoration; this is one reason blue-and-white became so common in ceramics produced in both Asia and Europe.

I pause on what time has written on this white porcelain. I see the fine, yellowish crack running down from the knob's neck, the small stains and the unglazed lower rim in an earthy brown tone. They are traces of use and fragility. I also notice the glaze shine and the intense cobalt blue of the winding vine with leaves, tendrils and the dotted band near the edge. It is a hard-paste jug lid, made around 1780 in Niderviller, France, and today separated from its jug.

I see it like a small planet against a dark void. The lid is a low, wide dome with a spherical knob on top, like a moon over its orbit. The background fading from black to light gray makes it float, and the light leaves a bright spot on the sphere and a short shadow beneath. The cobalt blue draws a winding vine that encircles the whole dome, framed by two blue lines and tiny dots. It is hard-paste porcelain from 1780 and, though the jug is missing, this satellite tells its story alone.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a shiny little hat for a giant cup. It is white with blue drawings that swirl around like a vine with tiny leaves and curly tails. On top it has a little ball that shines a lot, as if to pick it up with two fingers. Down below it has a stripe with little blue dots. If you look closely you see a yellowish line that is a crack and underneath it does not shine, it is brownish and rough. It is the little lid of a very old jug from France, from many, many years ago, and now it is all alone without its jug.
