What you would seeLo que verías

A black-and-white etching, almost square in format, showing a river landscape seen from above as if hovering over the water. In the foreground, four or five swallows skim the river surface; their long pointed wings, forked tails and pale bellies are clearly rendered, with trembling reflections on water hatched with very fine crisscross lines. One bird near the bottom center almost touches the water, its reflection merging with its plumage. In the middle ground, tinier birds glide above the winding river flanked by reeds, bushes and dense-crowned trees on the left bank. The background is dominated by sky: dark, heavily worked clouds on the left contrast with a bright opening on the right, where a pale shaft of light descends like a sunlit rain curtain. At the top, two large, highly detailed swallows fly diagonally, the underside of their wings shown feather by feather. A handwritten signature appears at lower right and a cursive B at lower left. The line work is energetic, with wash-like textures in the sky and precise strokes for water and birds, creating an atmosphere of a storm clearing.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two large swallows at the upper right and follow their diagonal down to the group skimming the water. Notice how the contrast between stormy clouds and the bright shaft of light in the distance structures the whole view. Look closely at the birds’ reflections on the river: tiny distortions that make the water seem to ripple.

What fascinates me is the black and white made only with lines. There is no gray ink, just very fine hatching and cross-hatching that, from a distance, look like pasty clouds or trembling water. Notice how the etching leaves the sky dark on the left and opens a bright clearing on the right, with that pale ray falling like a curtain. And below, the swallows skim the river and their reflection merges with the plumage, an effect achieved with nervous yet highly controlled line work.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this landscape as if I were floating very high, like a satellite above the meandering river. The sky fills almost the whole print and looks like a storm front: dark clouds on the left and a bright opening on the right with a ray of light breaking through. In the foreground, four or five swallows cross skimming the water and above, two others, very large and detailed, fly diagonally. It is an instant of light and movement captured from the air.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It feels like I am flying with them. Below there are four or five swallows with little scissor-shaped tails that almost touch the water and are reflected as if they were doubled. The river curves between little trees and reeds. Above, the sky looks angry on one side, with black clouds, and on the other side the sun comes in with a little ray that looks like rainy light. And higher up there are two giant swallows showing their little wings with all their tiny feathers.
