Bobbin lace
What you would seeLo que verías
A rectangular fragment of bobbin lace in pale ivory, with warm ochre discoloration from age, set against a deep black background that sharpens every thread. The piece is organized in two main sections. The upper area is a dense, regular net of diamond-shaped openings and eight-pointed star rosettes, made with thick, slightly fuzzy thread that creates a soft, three-dimensional texture; the top edge is uneven and faintly frayed, with small yellow-brown stains. Across the middle runs a straight, compact horizontal band with a repeated tiny picot pattern, serving as a visual bridge. Below it hang three ornamental points in inverted V shapes, the central one longest and sharply tipped, featuring interlaced scrolls, curved tape-like bands and foliated terminals resembling stylized leaves or flowers. Side lighting emphasizes the twist of the cord and the shadows cast through the openwork, revealing the transparency of the empty spaces between motifs. Subtle asymmetry and worn edges reveal its nature as an antique textile fragment, both delicate and resilient.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the geometric net at the top, then move down to the dividing band. Linger on the three hanging points and see how the thicker cord draws free curves over empty space. Notice the discoloration and irregular edges that speak to age and handling.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a lace insertion with edging of points made between 1600 and 1640 in Venice, Italy, using bobbin lace technique. The maker is unknown, as is common for textiles of this period. Venice was a major center for lace production in the 17th century, and such pieces were used to trim collars, cuffs, bed linens and liturgical vestments. The work belongs to the Textiles department and entered the collection as a gift of J. H. Wade. No specific original use is documented, but its structure — a band meant to be inserted between fabrics and a scalloped border — is typical of early Venetian lace.

Curious detailDato curioso
Early 17th-century Venetian bobbin lace was made by interlacing dozens of threads at once over a pillow marked with pins, with no backing fabric, which accounts for its remarkable openness and raised relief.

I pause at the joint between the two zones of this Venetian fragment from 1600 to 1640. On top I see the insertion band with its mesh of diamonds and eight-pointed star rosettes, made with thick twisted thread that creates an almost spongy relief. The straight strip in the center held the seam between fabrics. Below, the three V-shaped points show the wear of time, with frayed edges and ochre tones over ivory. Light reveals the patience of bobbin lace.

This mesh reminds me of constellations. The openwork diamonds are like sky maps and each eight-pointed star rosette looks like a star drawn with ivory thread against the black void of the background, which is like night. The central strip is the horizon and the three points below hang like comets with tails of scrolls and leaves. It is a fragment from Venice, from 1600 to 1640, that trapped light between threads so we can see brightness through the emptiness.

It looks like an upside-down castle made of thread. On top there is a net with lots of little diamonds and little eight-pointed stars, all in light ivory with a touch of old yellow. In the middle there is a straight little line like a bridge and below hang three big V-shaped peaks, the middle one is the longest, with curls and tangled little leaves. If you look at it against the light you see the tiny holes and shadows. It is a bit old and frayed at the edges.

Against the deep black background, how many large V-shaped points hang in the lower zone of the lace?
HintPista
Look at the bottom, after the straight strip that divides the piece, count the hanging peaks with scrolls.
#2
In the upper mesh of the ivory lace, how many points does each repeating star rosette have among the diamonds?
HintPista
Look at the little openwork stars that appear inside the dense geometric net on top.

The background that highlights the ivory and ochre lace is a very deep black, what color is it?
HintPista
It is the dark color that contrasts with the light ivory and lets you see the transparency of the openwork.
