What you would seeLo que verías

A tall, narrow black-and-white print with energetic, high-contrast linework on cream paper. The composition is a dense vertical column of figures centered on the sheet, leaving pale margins on both sides; it reads from top to bottom like a long street seen in deep perspective. In the immediate foreground at the bottom, two women lean on a table; one sleeps with her head down and the other holds a small child, both in striped dresses with buns and bows in their hair. Further back along the same elongated table are bottles, glasses and small dishes, surrounded by people drinking, chatting and slumping forward with the weary gestures of a long celebration. Toward the middle and background the crowd thickens under round paper lanterns that hover like white moons, left as blank paper against dense black ink. The light feels artificial and spotted, with halos and hatched shadows. Textures are typical of wood engraving: cross-hatching for shadows, curving lines for clothing, solid blacks for the throng. At the very bottom a handwritten pencil signature and the date ’89 are visible, with a small stray ink mark below the image.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the top and follow the white lanterns as if walking down the street, then move downward. Pause on the table in the foreground: the contrast between the bright bustle behind and the intimate exhaustion in front reshapes how you read the festivity.

This work is 14 Juillet, Rue de Belleville, minuit by Auguste Louis Lepère (French, 1849–1918), dated 1889. According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, where it is held in the Prints department as a Gift of Leonard C. Hanna Jr., it is a wood engraving. The title refers to the French national holiday of July 14, celebrated on Rue de Belleville in Paris, a historically working-class neighborhood. Lepère was a prominent printmaker in late 19th-century France. No further description is provided in the source data, but the date corresponds to the centennial of the French Revolution and the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris.

Curious detailDato curioso

Auguste Lepère helped revive original wood engraving in France by insisting that artists cut their own blocks, and he was closely associated with the Société des Peintres-Graveurs founded in 1889.

I focus on the cream-colored paper and the stark contrast between the black ink and the reserved whites. It is an 1889 wood engraving, with nervous linework made through cross-hatching and dense ink blots that build shadows and crowds. Notice the pale margins framing that central column of figures and how the lanterns look like white moons cut out from the black. Below you can see the pencil signature and the ’89 date, a direct trace of Lepère’s hand.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What captivates me most are those round lanterns floating above the crowd like white moons over Rue de Belleville at midnight. It is not sunlight, it is sharp artificial light that creates halos and streaks in the darkness of July 14th. The elongated perspective of the street creates a black ink sky where those glowing orbs look like festive constellations. Below, the table with bottles and glasses sits under their tired glow.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a tower of people squeezed into a very long street. At the very bottom, at the long table, there are two women in striped dresses with bows in their hair, one is asleep with her head resting and the other is holding a little girl. Higher up there are lots of bottles and glasses and a huge crowd of people who look tired but happy. I like that the lanterns look like little white balls shining and that everything is in black and white on cream paper.
