What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of the image, set against a soft gradient gray background, sits a small, low-profile ceramic dish with a wide, irregular mouth, photographed in three-quarter view from a slightly low angle. The vessel dominates the foreground with a compact, earthy presence. Its surface is black or very dark brown, matte and rough, covered with pale dust and whitish encrustations that reveal its age and porous materiality. Around the outer rim runs a band of light-colored incised geometric patterns, formed by diamonds and triangles with crosshatched interiors that stand out against the dark ground. On the right side, a thick, sturdy loop handle projects outward, dark and worn. On the opposite side, a modeled zoomorphic head protrudes, probably a stylized snake or feline, with a short snout, slit eyes and a coiled form rising over the rim like a tail or curled body. The interior is shadowed and dark, with a chipped, uneven lip. On the front belly a rectangular aged kraft paper label is attached, bearing the number 54 in black print, a trace of museum inventory. Soft lighting models the volume, casts a faint shadow beneath and highlights the relief of the incisions and the sculpted animal.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the overall silhouette: handle on one side and animal on the other, as if the object had a front and a back. Then follow the incised band and see how the light geometric pattern frames the body. Pause on the 54 label, a modern trace that turns an ancient object into a museum object.

ContextContexto

According to source data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a handled dish classified as ceramic in the Art of the Americas department, attributed to Colombia, by an unknown maker, dated to before 1921. It entered the collection as a Gift of W. A. Price. No precise information is recorded about its specific archaeological culture, findspot or pre-Hispanic manufacture date, so it cannot be securely assigned to a tradition such as Calima, Muisca or Quimbaya. Like many Andean ceramics, it probably had domestic or ritual use and is now preserved as material evidence of Colombian pottery practices.

Curious detailDato curioso

Though it looks black from slip or reduction firing, the incisions reveal the lighter color of the inner paste, a common technique in pre-Hispanic Colombian pottery to create contrast without paint.

When I look at this bowl I focus on its porous opaque skin in very dark brown and black tones, dotted with light dust and whitish concretions that speak of time underground. I love the band of geometric incisions with rhombuses and hatched triangles around the rim that stand out against the dark background. The thick ring handle and the modeled zoomorphic head with short snout and coiled body reveal the potter's hand. The kraft label with number 54 reminds us of its later life as a museum object inventoried by donors.

This bowl reminds me of a small crater seen from above, with its wide irregular mouth like an impact rim and its dark shadowed interior that seems to hold shade. The decoration of rhombuses and hatched triangles makes me think of constellations or maps traced to navigate at night. The sturdy ring handle feels like an orbital ring and the coiled zoomorphic head suggests a celestial serpent. I like to imagine what stories people told under the sky around objects like this, even if we do not know its original use.

I love this little bowl because it looks like it has a pet! On one side it has a chunky handle so you can hold it and on the other a little animal head with a flat snout pops out and stretches into a curly tail along the rim. It is blackish with light drawings of diamonds and triangles around the edge, like someone scratched them with a stick. It looks old and dusty and has a tag that says 54 like its museum name. I want to peek inside to see how dark it is.
