What you would seeLo que verías
At the center, a tall, slender woman walks in profile to the right, closely followed by two smaller girls. The central figure wears a broad kimono in soft salmon pink, its lower half covered with a continuous landscape of white clouds, green pines, bridges and sails on water; her obi is wide and voluminous, in gold brocade with floral medallions. Her hairstyle is high and elaborate, with a dark wing-like topknot and radiating golden hairpins fanning from the crown. Her face is pale, with half-closed eyes and a small mouth, conveying a serene expression. Behind her, the two attendants wear kimonos in pinkish and beige tones with scattered floral motifs and tassels hanging from the sleeves, a detail worn only by young girls; both gaze downward with modest demeanor and wear wooden geta sandals. The background is a flat parchment beige, without architecture, with vertical black Japanese calligraphy on the left and a decorative cartouche with ornate borders at the upper right. Publisher seals appear at the lower left corner. The light is flat and even, without shadows, typical of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, with crisp black outlines and areas of solid color and subtle gradation.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the commanding presence of Takihime and her landscape kimono, then lower your gaze to the small, bowed faces of her attendants. Notice the hairpins and the tassels on the children’s sleeves. Pay attention to the contrast between the scenic pattern on the main kimono and the simple floral motifs of the girls.
ContextContexto
Work by Japanese artist Chōbunsai Eishi (1756–1829), dated 1795, from the Edo period (1615–1868). It is a color woodblock print (nishiki-e) from the series New Patterns of Young Greens. According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, it depicts the courtesan Takihime with her two kamuro, young attendants. All three display the triple-fan crest of the Ogiya House of Fans on their kimono shoulders. The cartouche at the upper right gives the series title and the season: New Year. The image references the evening promenades of courtesans through Yoshiwara, the licensed pleasure quarter of Edo, a common sight at the time. The fragmented scenery on Takihime’s outer robe contrasts with the simpler floral patterns on the attendants’ robes.

The wide, luxurious obi and the numerous golden hairpins were distinctive markers of oiran, high-ranking courtesans, whose hairstyle could weigh several kilograms and take hours to arrange.

The conservatorLa restauradora
I pause on what is almost invisible at first glance: Takihime's salmon kimono does not repeat flowers like the girls' kimonos do, it unfolds an entire landscape around the hem with clouds, pines, bridges and little sails on the water. As a conservator I worry about that parchment background, so sensitive to light, and those soft gradations so typical of nishiki-e. Look also at the golden obi with medallions and the fan-shaped hairpins: each black outline was printed with a separate woodblock, with no shadows, pure precision from Eishi's woodcut in 1795.

I see this scene like a small universe in procession. Takihime moves to the right like a major planet and her two kamuro follow closely, like moons in careful orbit. Even the cartouche at the top right looks like a constellation announcing New Year according to the series title. I am struck by the triple fan on their shoulders, the emblem of the Ogiya house, repeating like a shared celestial symbol. Everything floats on a smooth parchment background with no architecture, as if they were walking across the emptiness of the sky.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
They look like three princesses playing parade! The tall lady walks in front with her peach-colored kimono that has little drawings of houses and boats at the bottom, and her hairstyle looks like black little wings with shiny golden sticks. The two little girls follow her in their pink kimonos with tassels hanging from the sleeves and their wooden geta sandals. They walk very close together looking down so seriously. At the top there are little black letters and a pretty decorated box. I like that there are no houses or anything behind them, just the three of them.
¡Parecen tres princesas jugando a desfilar!
