What you would seeLo que verías

A small vertical bronze plaque is photographed straight on against a background shading from dark gray at the top to almost white below. It is rectangular with a gently arched top edge and stands upright, casting a faint shadow around its base. The entire relief is rendered in gold, copper, and brown tones, with mottled patina and deeper shadows caught in the recesses. At the center, a seated woman fills nearly the whole field. Seen in profile and turned to the right, she bows her head and lowers her gaze. A veil or cloth covers her hair and falls down her back and alongside her face. She wears a long-sleeved garment with a full skirt, its folds sharply modeled across the arms, waist, and lap. Both arms reach forward toward the lower right corner, where her hands delicately hold a small flower with clearly separated petals, the crispest detail in the foreground. Behind her, the ground is not smooth: irregular, sketchy forms suggest rocks or foliage, particularly toward the upper right. A horizontal band near the bottom separates an inscription worked in relief and difficult to decipher, apparently reading SOUVENIR.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the downward curve of the head and back to the hands at lower right, then return to the face. Notice how the tiny flower, rather than her expression, gives the scene its emotional focus, and how the band of lettering at the bottom changes the plaque into an object made for remembrance.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is the obverse of a bronze medallion by the French artist Marie Alexandre Lucien Coudray (1864–1932), dated 1900–21 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, which credits it as a gift of Lawrence Hitchcock. It is classified under Metalwork and Decorative Art and Design; its culture is given as France, 19th century, even though the date extends into the 20th century. Only this side is shown here, so whatever may be on the reverse is not known from the record. The partly legible word SOUVENIR, French for a memory or keepsake, suggests a commemorative purpose, but its exact occasion is probably unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

The most surprising visual detail is the inscription at the foot: its letters seem partly dissolved into the bronze, as if the word itself were a memory becoming harder to read.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What kind of memory might this plaque have been made to preserve, and for whom?¿Qué tipo de recuerdo pudo haber buscado conservar este medallón y para quién?
  2. Why place the emotional emphasis on a small flower held in the hands instead of on the woman's face?¿Por qué la emoción se concentra en la flor entre las manos y no en el rostro de la mujer?
  3. How does your reading change if you think of this as a personal keepsake rather than a museum artwork?¿Cómo cambia tu lectura si piensas la pieza como un objeto personal de memoria y no solo como obra de museo?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the surface of this bronze. I see the mottled patina in golden, coppery and brown tones, with darker recesses that give depth to the relief. The folds of the sleeve, waist and full skirt are very well modeled, and the veil falling down the back catches different highlights. What I would care for most is the flower in the lower right corner, the sharpest detail, and the band with the relief inscription that seems to read SOUVENIR at the bottom.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at it as if observing a figure silhouetted against a night background. The woman fills almost the entire vertical rectangle with its slightly arched top, seated in profile facing right, head bowed. The background is not smooth, it has irregular shapes suggesting rocks or vegetation, like out-of-focus craters. The small flower she holds delicately shines like a point of light in the foreground. Below, the inscription SOUVENIR reminds me that this image was meant to preserve memory.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the lady is very calm and a little sad, sitting and looking at a tiny flower she holds in her hands. She wears a veil on her head covering her hair and a long dress with lots of wrinkles. I like that the flower looks clear with well drawn petals, right in the little corner at the bottom right. Behind her there are like little stones or bushes. At the bottom there are letters that say SOUVENIR, which is a French word for memory.
