What you would seeLo que verías

An etching in black ink on cream paper, horizontal in format, with the deckled plate mark faintly visible around the image. In the immediate foreground, a narrow boat fills the lower center; inside it sits a man wearing a cap and work clothes, facing forward with a hand near his chin, looking out toward the viewer. His figure is densely hatched with crosshatched lines, standing out against the paler water. Around and behind him, barges and lighters are moored together, piled with what looks like coal or rubble; one stern is lettered partly «JANE». Chains, planks and moorings are rendered with quick, sketchy strokes. The middle ground shows the broad River Thames with small rowing boats and two tiny figures rowing. On the right bank, warehouses, wooden wharves, uneven tall facades and, further back, a tall-masted sailing ship crowd the waterfront. On the left, the distant bank fades into haze with cranes, chimneys and vessels. The light is diffuse, early morning, without hard shadows; the atmosphere feels damp and slightly misty, with a large expanse of sky left almost blank, giving a sense of open space amid the meticulous tangle of lines.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the boatman in the foreground, the only clearly drawn face, then follow the cluster of barges that lead the eye into the distance. Notice how the almost empty sky and lightly shaded water balance the dense tangle of lines in the wharves and ships.

ContextContexto

A work by James McNeill Whistler (American, 1834–1903), dated 1859 and executed as an etching. It belongs to his early London period, often called the Thames Set, in which he recorded the urban and industrial river landscape. The print is housed in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art as a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph King. The title The Pool refers to the stretch of the Thames below London Bridge, a highly active port area in the nineteenth century. No detailed source description is given, so the specific state of this impression and its printing history are not recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso

This etching is part of the Thames Set, through which Whistler, only 25 at the time, helped revive etching in England by sketching directly from a boat on the river.

I focus on how this print is made. It is a black and white etching on cream paper, in a horizontal format, with an irregular edge and the plate mark barely visible. The linework is quick and nervous in chains and moorings, and very dense in the central boatman, who contrasts with the lighter water. Much of the sky is left almost blank to give it air. As an 1859 work on paper, I notice its fragility and the balance between meticulous detail and diffuse light.

I look at this scene like a sky at dawn. The diffuse light and mist over the Thames remind me of a morning observation, with no harsh shadows. The empty, light sky takes up a lot of space and makes the river feel like a horizontal milky way. Below, the moored barges and warehouses form an uneven skyline like a city silhouette at dusk. I imagine the boatman in the foreground taking a pause, while in the distance two figures row under that humid brightness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are so many boats together it looks like a parking lot for boats! In the middle there is a man with a cap sitting in his little boat, looking at us with his hand near his chin as if he is thinking. Around him there are big barges full of dark rocks, with chains and planks everywhere. One of them says JANE. Further back you can see the wide river, two people rowing and tall houses by the dock and a big sailboat. Everything is in black and white and it feels like a foggy morning.
