What you would seeLo que verías

A small black-and-white etching centered on a large sheet of rough, textured paper with deckled edges and a visible plate mark. In the foreground, a close-quarters struggle unfolds: on the left, two civilians in open shirts, dark trousers and disheveled hair desperately grip a soldier's rifle, one shouting with an outstretched arm and his face turned back. Facing them, a tight group of three uniformed soldiers seen from behind, wearing light coats, backpacks and hanging sabers, thrust forward with bayonets. The composition is tense and diagonal, figures crowded in the middle of the image. Light creates dense, blotchy shadows under their feet. The background shows a low, empty horizon, while on the ground lie sprawled bodies and bundles suggesting earlier victims. The etching technique is agitated, with cross-hatching, spattered aquatint and stark contrasts between inky black and paper white. Below the image a handwritten caption in script reads «Con razon o sin ella» (With reason or without it).

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the hands fighting over the rifle in the center, the fulcrum of the action. Then follow the outstretched arm of the man on the left and let your eyes drop to the fallen bodies on the ground, which show this violence has already begun.

ContextContexto

This is an etching by Francisco de Goya (1746–1828), dated about 1810–20, part of the series known as The Disasters of War. The series comprises about 82 prints, likely created in response to the Peninsular War and subsequent famine and repression in Spain, though the source description itself is minimal. The print is catalogued as a work on paper in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. Titled With Reason or Without It, it depicts civilians confronting soldiers. It was not published during Goya's lifetime; its broader historical context is generally understood through later scholarship.

What holds me here is the paper and the ink. Look at the rough, wide white sheet with its irregular edges and the plate mark framing the small, crowded image in the center. The black is not flat: it is dense, with crosshatched lines, splatters and stained shadows underfoot that reveal Goya's nervous etching. There is no beautified violence here. The light creates a strong contrast and lets you see the desperate gesture of the two civilians facing the three soldiers with their backs turned. It is a print that still feels damp.

I always look for horizons and here the horizon is desolate. It is low, empty, with no stars or promises, and that concentrates all the energy in the central clash. The composition is a tense diagonal: two working class men, with open shirts and tousled hair, clutch a rifle, while three uniformed soldiers in a compact group aim with bayonets. Like during an eclipse, the light outlines silhouettes and leaves bodies lying on the ground. There is no heroic sky, only gloom. War seen without constellations.

This picture gives me a knot in my stomach. On the left two men are shouting and holding very tightly onto a soldier's rifle, one with his mouth open and his arm stretched out. In front there are three soldiers all huddled together with their backs to us, with little backpacks and small swords hanging, pointing with shiny spikes. Everything is in black and white and very crowded in the middle, as if there were no air. Below there are shapes on the ground that look like sleeping people who will not get up. It feels very unfair.
