What you would seeLo que verías

A small horizontal etching printed in black ink on textured, off-white paper shows a pile of lifeless bodies heaped on a dark, roughly hatched ground in the foreground. At least six male corpses, dressed in early 19th-century clothing — light shirts, dark vests and trousers, some barefoot, some booted — lie tangled together, face up and face down, limbs splayed and heads lolled in stiff, unmistakably dead poses. Fine etched lines render intimate details: a sword resting by one body, a fallen hat, creased and stained fabric, and strands of hair. Dense cross-hatching and aquatint-like shading darken the earth and model the forms of the bodies, while the background remains almost empty and luminous, with only faint, loose strokes suggesting low buildings and a distant horizon. In the lower left the plate is signed Goya 1810, and centered below the image is the handwritten caption Tanto y mas. Light appears to come from the left, making pale faces stand out against the dark ground and the wide, embossed margin of the paper, where the plate mark and the fibrous texture of the sheet are clearly visible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the central heap of bodies and notice how Goya piles them without order, like refuse. Then look to the empty, pale background that isolates the slaughter and heightens its silence. Finally search for small humanizing details — the sword, the buttons, the hair — that restore individuality to each figure.

ContextContexto

This print belongs to Los Desastres de la Guerra (The Disasters of War), a series of 82 etchings by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya made between 1810 and 1820. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art data it is catalogued as an etching titled The Horrors of War: Even Worse, dated 1810. Goya, active in Spain from the late 18th to early 19th century, created the series as a witness to the violence of the Peninsular War against Napoleonic occupation and the subsequent famine in Madrid. Specific circumstances for this scene are not given in the source record, but the title and imagery probably denote victims piled after an execution or battle. The prints were not published during Goya's lifetime, likely because of their critical view of war and authority.

Curious detailDato curioso

Goya's Disasters of War series was not published in full until 1863, 35 years after his death, because of its unflinching denunciation of wartime cruelty and political power.

  1. How does the contrast between the almost blank background and the heavily shaded ground affect your reading of the scene?¿Qué efecto produce que Goya deje el fondo casi en blanco mientras el suelo donde yacen los cuerpos es tan oscuro?
  2. How does knowing the handwritten caption means So much and more, implying worse is to come, change your interpretation?¿Cómo cambia tu lectura de la imagen al saber que el título manuscrito dice Tanto y más, sugiriendo que lo peor está por venir?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the rough ivory paper and the plate mark surrounding the horizontal print. Notice how the black ink creates dense shadows with cross-hatching on the rough ground and gives volume to the six intertwined bodies. Light comes from the left and brightens the pale shirts and faces against the dark background. Below you can read the handwritten inscription Tanto y mas and on the left the signature Goya 1810 with the relief of the inking that we conservators care for so much.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this print as if it were an inverted night sky. The bright and empty background is the distant horizon with barely sketched low buildings, while the dark foreground is a terrible constellation of six fallen bodies. Sidelight highlights pale shirts, outstretched arms and tilted heads like pale craters on a dark, rough ground. The sword and the fallen hat are reference points, like stars that help locate the chaos in the darkness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see many men lying on the ground, all piled up and not moving, with light shirts and dark pants. One has a fallen hat and another has a sword beside him. The ground looks very dark and scratched and in the back there is almost nothing, just tiny little houses and a lot of white sky. Below it says Tanto y mas in handwriting and on the other side Goya 1810. It feels sad and silent, as if something very bad happened.
