Needle lace (Venetian Rose Point-Punto Rosallino)

What you would seeLo que verías

A very long, narrow strip extends across almost the entire image in a pronounced horizontal, panoramic format. It is shown isolated against a flat, deep-black background, with no person, setting, or scale reference. The lace is an aged ivory or cream color, made of fine thread, and its delicacy stands out sharply against the darkness. At the top runs a straighter, simpler edge that would allow the piece to be attached to another fabric. Below, the body fills with a dense tangle of small flowers, rosettes, leaves, curls, and connecting bars that leave innumerable tiny openings. The lower edge ends in a repeated rhythm of small scallops and points, like miniature pendants. The pattern looks symmetrical and continuous from a distance, but up close there are slight variations in the flowers, the thickness of the thread, and the raised relief. The light is even and soft, without harsh shadows; it emphasizes the fibrous texture, the tiny knots, and the contrast between solid thread and empty space. The whole feels light, almost floating, yet visually dense because of the accumulation of ornament.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow its full length slowly, as if reading a line of writing, then come in close for the lacework structure. Notice how the apparently regular repeat changes slightly in each motif: that irregularity reveals the handwork and shifts the reading from ornament to accumulated labor.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a needle-lace edging made in Venice, Italy, between 1660 and 1699, identified as Venetian Rose Point, or Punto Rosallino. Its author is unknown. In the seventeenth century Venice was renowned for needle lace worked with a needle and thread, with raised floral designs prized for their fineness. A long edging like this was probably sewn to a garment or another textile, although its specific use is not known. The piece belongs to the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although the pattern seems to repeat like a printed design, every small flower and loop was formed stitch by stitch; when viewed closely, no two repeats are exactly alike.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the perception of the lace change when we think of the time and number of stitches behind each small motif?¿Cómo cambia la percepción del encaje cuando pensamos en el tiempo y en la cantidad de puntadas que hay detrás de cada motivo pequeño?
  2. What might this edging have transformed when it was sewn onto a garment or another textile?¿Qué pudo haber transformado esta puntilla cuando estaba cosida a una prenda o a otro textil?
  3. Why does presenting it on black, without a body or a setting, turn it into something almost like drawing or writing?¿Por qué presentarla sobre negro, sin cuerpo ni contexto, la vuelve algo parecido a un dibujo o a una escritura?

I pause at how fragile this almost cream ivory looks against the deep black background. It is a very long edging made only with needle and thread, no loom, between 1660 and 1699 in Venice as Punto Rosallino or rose point. It has a straight upper edge for sewing to another fabric and repeated waves below. I am amazed by the tiny open spaces, the little bridges and the raised relief in flowers and leaves that looks symmetrical from afar but up close shows variations from handwork.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Seeing this very long panoramic strip reminds me of looking at a constellation against the night. On the deep black floats a universe of tiny flowers, rosettes and scrolls in ivory, dense yet light at once. It is a Venetian needle lace from the late seventeenth century, probably to adorn a garment. Like the sky, it seems like a regular continuous pattern, but when you get closer you discover that no star, sorry, no flower is exactly the same as another.

It looks like a magic strip floating in the darkness! It is super long and creamy, with lots of tiny flowers, little leaves and small holes like windows. At the bottom it has little wavy points hanging down. They told me it is a lace from Venice from a very long time ago, from 1660 to 1699, made by hand with needle and thread. From far away it looks even, but if you get closer you see each flower has its own shape and is a little bit raised.

  1. #1

Against the dark background, what creamy color is the very long lace strip?

    HintPista

It is a pale aged tone, between white and beige, that stands out strongly against the deep black.

  2. #2

How many different edges does the edging have: one straight for sewing and another with what repeated shape below?

    HintPista

Look at the lower border, it looks like a series of rounded little tabs that go up and down like small waves.

  3. #3

What tiny motifs repeat throughout the lace net forming rosettes and little leaves?
