What you would seeLo que verías
In the foreground, an uneven cobblestone square opens between tall buildings and a domed church with a triangular pediment at the center. The etching, in black ink on cream paper, unfolds with fine lines and crosshatching to show dozens of small figures: maimed soldiers, beggars and sick people. On the left, a cluster of cloaked men with crutches and broad-brimmed hats converses beside an elderly man with a cane and an amputated leg; another crawls on the ground. Toward the middle, several figures drag themselves, lean on crutches or sit hunched, with drooping hats and ragged clothes. In the right background, a circular well with a pulley gathers women washing and carrying. The architecture combines facades with open windows, laundry hung on balconies, irregular rooftops and ruined walls opening onto a fortified gate. The light is even and almost documentary, without deep dramatic shadows, revealing textures of stone, fabric and metal. Along the lower edge, three blocks of text in early modern French accompany the scene.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First scan the crowd in the foreground from left to right and notice how each body tells a different injury. Then lift your gaze to the central church and the buildings enclosing the square, to read the space as both shelter and enclosure. Finally look at the small groups by the well and the text along the bottom edge, which frames the scene as a collective fate.
ContextContexto
An etching from 1633 by French artist Jacques Callot (1592–1635), part of the series Les Grandes Misères de la Guerre, comprising 18 prints. The series is one of the most famous early depictions of the horrors of war in the seventeenth century, made during the Thirty Years’ War and the French occupation of Lorraine. This plate, number 15, shows the fate of soldiers after combat: the field hospital and beggary. The caption at the bottom, in French, explains that some die, some are left crippled crawling on the ground, and others reach the hospital. The museum source provides no further description, but the work is widely studied as an early critique of warfare.

Curious detailDato curioso
Callot pioneered the use of hard varnish for etching, which allowed him to draw extremely fine details with great sharpness and to produce series that circulated widely across Europe.

I see black ink on cream paper with beige and stone gray tones, worked with fine lines and crosshatching. This 1633 etching speaks to me through texture: the uneven cobblestones of the plaza, the irregular roof tiles, the laundry hanging from balconies and the metal of the well pulley. I notice how each crutch, cane and wide-brimmed hat is drawn with precise economy to distinguish dozens of injured figures. I am interested in how the even, almost documentary light preserves every detail without dramatization, revealing the wear of the paper and the acid bite on the plate.

This irregular plaza reminds me of observing a star field: dozens of small dots that, seen up close, tell different stories. The black engraving on a cream background works like an old map. At the center, the church with a dome and triangular pediment is my pole star, a fixed point among tall buildings, balconies, ruined walls and a fortified gate in the background. To the right, the circular well with a pulley is like a crater where women who wash and carry gather. And below, like a constellation of notes, three blocks of text in old French anchor the scene and explain the soldiers fate.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
There are so many tiny little people in this plaza! They look like little ants with big hats, capes and sticks to walk with. Some use crutches and canes, one is crawling on the ground and another has his leg hurt. I like to find details: the church with its round dome like a cake, the clothes hanging from the balconies, the well where some ladies wash and the open windows of the houses. Everything is drawn with little black lines on cream colored paper. At the bottom there are three little boxes with letters in another language that tell what happened to the soldiers after the war.
