What you would seeLo que verías

A wide horizontal black-and-white etching with fine, dense linework typical of the medium. In the foreground, a dusty battlefield stretches across the plate, littered with fallen horses and riders lying face down, with helmets and weapons scattered; a riderless horse rears in the center while another collapses, rendered with hatched lines that define muscle and mane. Behind, a compact mass of cavalry clashes: sabers raised, banners waving, and galloping horses forming a turbulent front from left to right. The background is dominated by large, billowing clouds of smoke rising in swirling, cross-hatched volutes from cannon fire, beneath a sky streaked with horizontal strokes. In the far distance faint infantry formations with pikes and the silhouette of a town or fortress on hills appear at both ends. Along the lower margin runs an inscription in French in three columns, numbered on the right, with the publisher's imprint. The paper has an aged creamy tone with a porous texture and the plate mark visible around the image.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the horizon of smoke that structures the scene, then drop to the foreground where fallen bodies anchor the violence. Linger on the rearing horse at the center and on the swirling smoke, which turns chaos into an almost rhythmic composition.

ContextContexto

This print belongs to the series Les Grandes Misères de la Guerre, etched by Jacques Callot and published in 1633 in France using etching technique. It is part of the Prints collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art, credited to the Charles W. Harkness Endowment Fund. The 18-plate series depicts episodes related to the Thirty Years' War and was widely circulated in Europe for its stark realism. This sheet, titled The Battle, presents military combat without idealization, characteristic of Callot's critical view of contemporary violence. No additional provenance or source description is recorded in the museum data.

Curious detailDato curioso

Callot advanced etching by using hard varnish and a tool called the échoppe, allowing lines of varying depth and an unusually high level of detail for such small, densely populated prints.

If you get close to the plate you will see what I love about this print: the extremely fine etching line. Look at the creamy porous paper and how the black ink settles in dense lines to form the horses in the foreground, with very detailed muscles and manes. In the background, Callot uses circular hatching for the cannon smoke and horizontal lines for the sky. Below you can see the inscription in French in three columns, which is part of the print and must be preserved.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What captivates me most is the sky and the atmosphere of this battle. There are no stars, but a hatched sky darkened by smoke. Notice those large swirling plumes rising in the center and to the right, made with circular shading. It is like watching a human-made storm. In the distance, on the hills at both ends, you can make out a city or fortress beneath that gunpowder haze that erases the horizon.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are so many horses! In front there are some lying on the ground with their fallen riders and helmets everywhere, and in the middle one is rearing up on two legs and another is falling down. It makes me a little sad to see them like that. Further back there are lots of soldiers on horseback fighting with sabers and flags waving. Everything is full of smoke like giant gray clouds and even the sky looks streaky.
