What you would seeLo que verías

A black-ink woodcut on aged, cream-colored paper with a slightly irregular texture and softened edges. The composition is horizontal and reads from left to right as a procession moving across a nearly empty ground with small stones, tufts of grass, and tiny plants. On the far left, a king sits in profile on a flat litter carried on men's shoulders. He wears a tall, pointed, drooping cap, a patterned sash at his waist, and a cloth around his hips; his legs are folded, his feet bare, and one hand is extended in a calm gesture. A very large woven parasol on a long pole shades him, its circular surface filled with dense cross-hatching. Below and around the litter, barefoot bearers with long hair and cloths at their waists strain in varied poses. At the center, a man carries a decorated drum and another raises a long sword. To the right, several musicians blow long wind instruments, one with a cloth banner fluttering above it. All the figures have muscular, carefully hatched bodies drawn with fine, energetic lines. At the top, in large capital letters, reads 'DER KVNIG VON GVTZIN', flanked by small floral ornaments. There is no landscape or architecture behind them, so all attention falls on the bodies, fabrics, and instruments.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the seated king on the left and follow the direction of his hand toward the musicians. Then notice how almost all the bodies repeat the same European muscular model, despite their different roles. That contrast reveals as much about the artist's gaze as about the court being depicted.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this woodcut, *The King of Cochin*, is by the German artist Hans Burgkmair (1473–1531), is dated 1488–1531, and is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. The inscription identifies the ruler of Gutzin, a period spelling associated with Cochin, in present-day India. Burgkmair probably never traveled there: like other European printmakers of his time, he likely worked from travelers' accounts. The image therefore combines observed or reported elements, such as the litter and parasol, with visual conventions familiar to a European audience. The exact account that inspired this print is not stated in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

The inscription uses V where modern spelling would use U — KVNIG and GVTZIN — a common convention in early printing, when U and V were not yet consistently separate letters.

  1. What does this procession emphasize about royal power, and what might it leave out?¿Qué subraya esta procesión sobre el poder real y qué podría estar dejando fuera?
  2. How can we tell that this is an imagined view made from Europe rather than a scene drawn from life?¿Cómo se nota que es una visión imaginada desde Europa y no una escena dibujada del natural?
  3. How would the same court look if it had been depicted by an artist from Cochin at the time?¿Cómo se vería esta misma corte si la hubiera representado un artista de Cochín de la época?

I focus on the material: aged cream paper with softened edges and a slightly irregular texture. The black ink sits firmly and the woven pattern of the parasol remains dense and clear, with fine hatching that gives volume to the bodies. I love the tiny pebbles and sprigs on the ground, made with minimal marks. This horizontal print lets us see the work of the woodblock and how pressure leaves such a crisp imprint on the surface.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this procession like a celestial parade moving left to right. The king is raised on the litter, under that huge circular parasol that looks like a woven portable sun. The musicians with extra long wind instruments point forward like antennas. I wonder about the inscription at the top, DER KVNIG VON GVTZIN, and about the empty sky with no architecture or horizon. With no background, everything becomes a figure in transit over an almost bare ground.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like everyone is walking together like in a parade. The king sits cross legged with no shoes, wearing a tall pointy hat that flops a bit, and a giant parasol keeps the sun off him. I like the men carrying the litter because they push hard with bare feet. There is also a drum and a long sword, and further on musicians blowing super long trumpets with a little tasseled cloth that flutters.
