What you would seeLo que verías

A circular bronze medal photographed straight on against a soft neutral gray background, tilted slightly forward so its thickness and relief are visible. At the center, in medium to high relief, stands a female allegorical figure in three-quarter profile facing right, embodying the Republic or the Nation. Her hair is pulled into a low bun, and she wears a classically draped peplos that leaves the right shoulder bare and falls in heavy, wind-blown folds to her bare feet, one foot slightly forward on a linear base. In her right hand she holds a small bunch of wheat ears, while her left hand rests on a thick book or tablet set on a low pedestal adorned with finely detailed oak leaves and branches. Behind her to the left, an axe of a fasces wrapped in cloth emerges from the drapery. Around the outer rim runs an arched inscription in capital letters: ÉLU PAR L'ASSEMBLÉE NATIONALE LE XVII JANVIER MCMXIII. On the lower left the incised signature reads Léon DESCHAMPS, and at the bottom a blank rectangular cartouche is reserved for engraving. The surface shows an uneven golden-brown patina with soft shadows emphasizing folds, anatomy and metal texture, with highlights on the shoulder and knee. Light from the upper left casts a crisp shadow beneath the medal on the light gray surface.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the central figure and how her stance balances stability and flowing drapery. Then follow the circular inscription to anchor the date, and linger on the small attributes — wheat, book and oak — that turn the woman into a national allegory.

ContextContexto

Source data identify this piece as the reverse of the Poincaré Medal by French sculptor Léon Julien Deschamps (1860–1928), dated to the 1900s, made of bronze and held in the Decorative Art and Design department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. Deschamps was active during the Belle Époque and known for academic allegorical medals and public sculpture. The legible inscription refers to 17 January 1913, when Raymond Poincaré was elected President of the French Republic by the National Assembly, indicating the medal commemorates that political event. No further details about the commission, mintage or precise iconographic program are given in the source information.

Curious detailDato curioso

French Third Republic commemorative medals often included a blank cartouche on the reverse, like the one at the bottom here, left empty to later engrave the recipient's name.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I pause before this bronze medal and notice its golden brown patina with highlights on the shoulder and knee, and how the light from above reveals every heavy fold of the peplos and the oak leaves on the pedestal. I am drawn to the well preserved medium and high relief, the signature of Léon Deschamps at the lower left and the empty cartouche waiting for an engraving. The arched inscription records the election of January 17 1913 and speaks of an object made to last.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I think about medals and dates that mark political orbits. This piece makes me read the inscription ÉLU PAR L'ASSEMBLÉE NATIONALE LE XVII JANVIER MCMXIII as if it were a coordinate in time, a fixed point in 1913. The allegorical figure holds wheat ears and a book, resting them on an oak decorated pedestal, as if anchoring the republic to land and knowledge. I wonder what sky Paris saw that January night.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This metal lady looks like a superhero from long ago. She is barefoot, wearing a long dress that seems to move even though it is bronze, and she holds wheat stalks like magic flowers and a thick book. She has a hidden axe behind her and little tree leaves at her feet. Around the edge there are big letters circling the whole medal and at the bottom there is an empty little rectangle where I would draw my name. It shines where the light hits it.
