What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a bullring rendered in smoky grays and deep blacks, a massive dark bull gores a bullfighter lying on his back on the sand, his body limp, legs outstretched and head near the animal's horns; his light-colored suit stands out sharply against the bull's dense black mass, whose tensed muscles and raised tail convey violent motion. Behind and to the left, a second bullfighter crouches forward holding a cape, his face tight with urgency as if arriving too late to help. In the background, the barrier wall runs horizontally with a rough, stained texture; atop it a cloaked, hunched figure leans or leaps over, flanked by dark, indistinct shapes suggesting onlookers peering into the arena. The print is enclosed by a thick black border and numbered 33 in the upper right margin, pressed onto white paper with deckled edges and wide margins. Low, raking light casts heavy shadows beneath the bull and the fallen body while leaving the foreground sand pale and almost empty, heightening the isolation of the tragedy. The etched line is nervous and granular, with cross-hatching and aquatint washes that give grit to the sand and depth to the bull's coat, typical of an intaglio engraving.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the stark contrast between the bull's black bulk and the pale fallen body, then follow the diagonal of the advancing assistant with the cape and finish on the lonely silhouette over the barrier. Notice how the empty, bright foreground offers no escape and how the dense shadow pooling under the bodies anchors the composition in inevitable tragedy.

ContextContexto

This print belongs to La Tauromaquia, a series of 33 etchings created by Francisco de Goya in 1815-1816 devoted to the history and tragedy of Spanish bullfighting. It depicts the death of the celebrated matador José Delgado Guerra, known as Pepe Illo, who died in Madrid in 1801, a legendary episode Goya reimagined with dramatic license. The plate was etched in 1816, but this impression is a posthumous printing from 1876, which explains the paper and the visible numbering. The technique listed as engraving combines etching, aquatint and drypoint, common in Goya's printmaking to achieve strong tonal contrasts. No further specific data about the commission or circulation of this sheet is provided beyond its conservation at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso

Goya's La Tauromaquia does not record bullfights he witnessed firsthand but reconstructs historical and literary episodes of bullfighting, and plate 33 showing Pepe Illo's death serves as the tragic finale that closes the entire series with an emblematic fatality.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

If you look closely at the paper you will see Goya's nervous line and how he combined etching with aquatint and drypoint to create such dramatic chiaroscuro. The sand was made with grainy washes and crosshatched lines, while the deep black of the bull comes from dense pools of ink. Notice the thick black border framing the scene and the number 33 at the top right, a trace of the posthumous 1876 edition on paper with deckled edges and a wide pale margin that lets the image breathe.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What hooks me is the light in this bullring as if it were an eclipse. The arena is an almost empty universe, a very pale sandy foreground that looks like outer space, and at the center two dark bodies collide like stars. The contrast between the fallen bullfighter's pale suit and the absolute black of the bull is brutal, like light and shadow on the moon. The dense shadow under both figures and the rough wall in the background enclose the scene like a closed horizon where something unavoidable happens.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The black bull looks huge and angry, with its tail up, and the bullfighter is lying on the sand in his light-colored suit, not moving at all. It makes me sad because he is alone in the middle of all the white sand and no one can help him quickly. Behind him there is another man with a cape running bent over and more tiny people peeking over the wall. Everything looks very dark around them and very light where the bull is, as if a lamp were shining only on them.

In the upper right corner there is a small number showing this print's place in the series of 33, what number is it?

    HintPista

Look at the top right inside the white margin, a number printed over the black border.

  2. #2

What color is the large stocky animal charging at the center of the ring?

    HintPista

It is the darkest tone in the print, almost the same as the border around it, and it contrasts with the fallen bullfighter's light suit.

  3. #3

On the very light empty sand in the foreground, how many main figures clash at the center: one bull and how many fallen bullfighters?

    HintPista

Count only the body in light clothing lying on its back under the bull, at the center of the light.
